some guy on ebay is selling the koss plug with imitation etymotic ear
buds for 20 bucks. I bought them with very little expectations, but have been amazed by them. First the sound quality of the koss plugs is excellent. i have no idea how a $15 headphone can produce such fidelity. my previous headphone was grado sr-60 for comparison second the plugs this guy has made work great. they seal out noise well and work great in noisy subways, airplanes etc. they fit nicely in my ear . i spent nearly a month researching a hi quality noise cancelling headphone. all had their problems, but for the price this one wins hands down. i encourage others to check it out. |

Koss The Plug" earphones are not a distinct device, but a family of devices that have been morphing for several years. The last time I tried them, they had great bass, but fell on their face above about 3 KHz. This happens to coincide with many reviews of the devices over the year. Any IEM is profoundly affected, primarily in the bass range, by how they fit the listener's ear canal. While balanced bass can help lots of things, there is no way for conventional mass-produced flexible tips to put back in treble that was never there. OTOH, for $20 it is hard to lose much by purchasing a set of Koss "The Plug" IEMs. Good starter pieces. |

I see the seller also offers the Sony MDR-EX51LP earbuds for a little
more $$. They're quite neutral sounding. I also own the Etymotic ER-4P's but at around $300, they cost too much to withstand abuse in the gym. I'd say the Sony's sound 75% as good as the Etymotics (with the included Sony ear tips) which makes them quite a bargain. I decided to order the Sony/Etymtotic combo and i'm expecting nice results. Btw, he offers the ear tips alone for cheaper, but at $35, I can afford a back-up pair of headphones. I think that the general take on the MDR-EX51 and 71 earphones is that they have the "Sony sound", long familiar to users of MDR-7506 and V6 headphones - a peak in the mid bass and upper midrange. Here's an article that describes the problem and provides a fix. http://www.linkwitzlab.com/reference_earphones.htm I also own the Etymotic ER-4P's but at around $300, they cost too much to withstand abuse in the gym. Their pricing is an artifact of the days before earphones went mainstream with the iPod market. I'd say the Sony's sound 75% as good as the Etymotics (with the included Sony ear tips) which makes them quite a bargain. I decided to order the Sony/Etymtotic combo and i'm expecting nice results. MFR-RX71s and 51s are basically the same equipment, but with different pricing and different cords. Not a bad value at the price. I sort of think of them as Koss "The Plug" with response above 5 KHz. Shame, a bit too much response above 5 KHz. Here's a post by someone who has studied some of the alternatives a bit more closely using publicly-available tools: http://www.peterprovost.org/archive/...4/10/3183.aspx |

Particularly the most recent version, the white one that's a lot more streamlined-looking, presumably to entice owners of iPods. The older, more squat design, that came in gray and either purple or blue, was far superior sonically. Even the old one benefits from a device with some sort of equalization; fortunately, my MP3 unit, a Creative MuVo, has a rudimentary equalizer. Bill |
