I have not taken a holiday in ages and wanted to take 3 weeks off in
August/September and do a European country. The choices right now are Italy,
Greece and Spain.

Any suggestions? I had planned on renting a car and driving around rather
than jumping on an organized tour. Any recommendations?

Actually, I wanted to mention France too, but I figured I would have drawn
fire from the likes of McKelvy!

I doubt if France has suffered any serious tourism drop because of the fact
there government is wimpy on terrorism.

If I were taking a vacation abroad, my choices, for what it's worth, would
be Ireland or Hong Kong.

**Come down to Australia instead. Australia is huge and you have a diverse
range of places to choose from (impossible to see all in a few weeks). At
this time of year, you can swelter in North Queensland and Northern
Territory, or snow ski in New South Wales and Victoria. Australia is
friendly, very inexpensive, safe and easy to get around. Food is cheap and
high quality, tipping is not required, driving is easy (except in Sydney)
and we (mostly) all speak English. The flight is a bit of a bugger though.

If you are restricted to your choices, then I would go for Italy, first,
Spain, second and Greece a distant last.

Forget the Mediterranean, you ought to visit Scotland.
I once took a motorbike trip for a month there, just me and the bike.
The best vacation I've ever had! No nagging wife, kids or

why Hong Kong?

Because I enjoyed it immensely the 2 times I was there before.

One of the most alive cities you can imagine, great bargains on many items,
especially clothing.

Beautiful geography. Great entertainment. Great food.
What's not to like?

The smell of sewege for starters. I like the skyline but I didn't find the
landscape to be particularly interesting at all. I was not crazy about the food
one bit. I wonder if by alive you mean over-populated? It is the most densely
populated piece of real estate on earth. The only bargains I found were on high
end film camaras and silk products.I did find a lot of scam operations though.
Now if I were asked to go back there again for work I would, but I would not
consider a trip there on my own dime. I will say this for Hong Kong though, it
was the only place I could make listening comparisons between a Rockport Sirius
III, a Clear Audio Master Reference and a Forsell Air Reference all with the
same cartridge. I did enjoy that and found it quite enlightening.

One of the few times that I have to agree with McKelvy. Hong Kong is
phenomenal. The skyline makes Manhattan look like Wichita, Kansas, the neon
lights makes Times Square look like a traffic intersection in Canton, Ohio.
And what you call over-population, I call street life and energy. Even New
York City in unmatched in terms of the sheer vitality of Hong Kong.

Add to that, a true shoppers paradise, everything from street vendors
selling chimsa to (as you have pointed out) Rockport Sirius dealers, and not
nearly as prohibitively expensive as European cities.

In terms of food to call Hong Kong outstanding would be a euphemistic
injustice. The range of cuisine available is in the same league as New York,
San Francisco or London.

A truly wonderful place.

What I call over population is overpopulation. It is the reason the smell of
sewege permeates the entire city. The sewege system can't handle the
population. If you like wall to wall people then Hong Kong is a great place. I
thought Soylent Green was a grim vsion of the future not a bright one though. I
can live without those kinds of crowds.

Add to that, a true shoppers paradise, everything from street vendors
selling chimsa to (as you have pointed out) Rockport Sirius dealers, and not

Like I said, I thought the bargains were pretty much limmited to high end
camaras (an interest to me as a Lieca owner) and silk products. The rest was
the same stuff you can get anywhere else for the same price or less.

In terms of food to call Hong Kong outstanding would be a euphemistic
injustice. The range of cuisine available is in the same league as New York,

London perhaps. Both being pretty weak. You can get better food here in L.A.
than you can in Hong Kong. San Fransisco and New York blow Hong Kong away for
food. But really, if food is what you want go to New Orleans or Santa Fe or
Belgium.

A truly wonderful place.

I found it a mixed bag. To each his own.

Actually, London really has transformed in the last 10 years from a grotty,
grimy European capital to a truly cosmoplitan city, replete with world-class
shopping and eating. I would definite put it in the same league as SF and
NYC.

I can't say that I have sampled everything London has to offer within the past
10 years. It is obviously better but still not in the same league as New York
or San Fransisco to my taste buds.

I am not too sure about New Orleans - the cuisine, though good, is not very
eclectic.

I'm not sure how one gets any more eclectic than two forms of indigenous styls
of food in one area, both of which are unlike any cuisine anywhere else on
earth. But the bottom line for me is taste. For me nothing comes close to New
Orleans. I often say they have the second best food in the world. Who has the
best? New Orleans. I give them the 2 top spots. It's that good.

I've never been to Santa Fe, so I will not comment. But Belgium? I
know they have fancy beers and expensive chocolates, but food???

It seems to be a well kept secret but yes, the food there is awsome. But hey,
it is truly a matter of taste. By the way, I think the chocolates in Belgium
are the best but not the most expensive. In fact my favorite chocolates are a
bargain. But again, taste.

A truly wonderful place.

I found it a mixed bag. To each his own.

I have not taken a holiday in ages and wanted to take 3 weeks off

in
August/September and do a European country. The choices right now
are
Italy,
Greece and Spain.

Any suggestions? I had planned on renting a car and driving

around
rather
than jumping on an organized tour. Any recommendations?

Actually, I wanted to mention France too, but I figured I would

have
drawn
fire from the likes of McKelvy!

I doubt if France has suffered any serious tourism drop because of

the
fact
there government is wimpy on terrorism.

If I were taking a vacation abroad, my choices, for what it's

worth,
would
be Ireland or Hong Kong.

why Hong Kong?

Because I enjoyed it immensely the 2 times I was there before.

One of the most alive cities you can imagine, great bargains on many
items,
especially clothing.

Beautiful geography. Great entertainment. Great food.
What's not to like?

The smell of sewege for starters.

Just like Paris?

Funny. I didn't really notice it in Paris. There were areas in Hong Kong

where
the stentch was so bad that I had to walk around it for fear of throwing

up.
They have a serious sewege problem there.

You need a better tour guide.

I was pretty happy with the one I had. Not his fault about the plumbing.

I like the skyline but I didn't find the
landscape to be particularly interesting at all. I was not crazy about

the
food
one bit.

Palette of the beholder Iguess.

I wonder if by alive you mean over-populated?

I mean it seemed like there was vitality.

It is the most densely
populated piece of real estate on earth.

Kinda like New Jersey.

You can live in a house in New Jersey yes? Those sixty story highrise

apartment
buildings in Hong Kong were just plain creepy to me. The population

density
there is just ridiculous.

People tend to flock where there's economic freedom I guess.
It never bothered me, the driving on the wrong side of the road did though.
:-0

Maybe we drive on the wrong side of the road. Left side did come first all be
it on horse back.

The only bargains I found were on high
end film camaras and silk products.

Used to be great values on home electronics and many products from

Europe.

Used to be.

I did find a lot of scam operations though.

Like New York City.

I haven't done much shopping in NYC

Now if I were asked to go back there again for work I would, but I

would
not
consider a trip there on my own dime. I will say this for Hong Kong
though, it
was the only place I could make listening comparisons between a

Rockport
Sirius
III, a Clear Audio Master Reference and a Forsell Air Reference all

with
the
same cartridge. I did enjoy that and found it quite enlightening.

Good for you.

Thank you. Hey, if you want to go there and you liked it before, more

power to
you.

All I was doing was giving my impressions.
You gave yours. In the end, they're worth what we each paid for them.

I guess but I was paid, I didn't pay.

Hi.

Can we post about audio equipment please?

Thanks.

Your post isn't about audio, either. Neither are the e-mails you've
been sending to everyone. If you want to talk about audio equipment,
go ahead.

It at least has the word "audio" in it.
This newsgroup has toilet-bowled into a political ****-fest, and it is
going to stop. NOW.

Neither are the e-mails you've been sending to everyone.

They don't have to be. Your email doesn't have a puiblic listing of
marc.phillips.personal.email.for.audio.chat, nor does anyone elses.
Annoyed by being called out for the errors you have made in a public fora?
Stop making them.

As for the folks that have "threatened" to contact my ISP if I mail them
again (s888wheel and vinylanach)- KNOCK YOURSELVES OUT. They have less
tolerance of mis-use of public fora than I do. Continue posting off topic
political garbage, and not only will I continue to send mails to you
demanding your improper use of the newsgroup cease, but I will also
forward emails to your ISP administration as well as senior execs at the
company. Results will happen and this newsgroup will contain the traffic
it was intended for.

If you want to talk about audio equipment, go ahead.

I would, however the s/n ratio in this newsgroup isn't high enough to make
any threads worthwhile at this point. That will change, and in short
order. Do your part and take your political garbage to alt.politics. Most
folks come to this newsgroup to get *away* from that kinda garbage. Why
bring that nonsense here, where it is completely off topic and where
people don't want to read it?

This is an audio related newsgroup. Post audio here. Political discussion
does not belong here. Do not post it. Failure to use this group for its
intended purpose and continued abuse of it WILL result in
retro-moderation, cancellation messages, emails to offenders ISP's and
senior execs of those ISP's, and blanket additions of offending domains
into the Real Time Internet Black Hole List. This isn't the first
newsgroup that has required some major cleanup that I have undertaken -
and it will not be the last. Anyone want to dance? Take a number.

Post audio.

Everything else to alt.politics or /dev/null

Great prices on weed.

Really?

That's what I heard.

I guess I'd better cancel that trip to Amsterdam, then.

How come the Newsgroup Nanny didn't email me? I feel left out. Did she
whale on Schizo or Jacob? How about the Krooborg?

It probably got bounced back, just like my last three e-mails to you! :-(
