Default TEAC 80-8 Vari speed option question......

Hello,

If a TEAC 80-8 comes with an external "vari-speed" box, does it mean
the capstan is not controlled by the wall outlet's frequency ? Does
anyone know ?

Thanks,

Daniel

.....to be more precise I'm asking if the original 80-8 motor, a
Hysteresis Synchronous capstan originally, needed to be replaced (for a
DC servo capstan) in order for the vari-speed to work ?

That's what they did. I believe the 80-8 vari-speed motor was the
same used in the later 38 model.

Thanks again ... and I have a followup: Is the modified 80-8 as
reliable as the stock one ?

BUT, that configuration was very popular in Japan because different
cities there may have either 50 or 60 Hz power. So the Japanese were
fairly quick to go to servo capstan designs on better machines just because
it's less pulley swapping work, fewer models to stock, etc.

Well...I used an 80-8 from 1981 to 1990 without a hitch. I installed the
variable speed upgrade in 1981 or 1982 and it worked flawlessly throughout
that period.
