Overdue renovation for a local music venue:

"Music fans have long complained about the Music Hall's unforgiving
acoustics and the resulting mediocre sound. O'Connor said Austin
acoustic designer Ken Dickensheets will design a house sound system, one
that could be configured to accommodate anything from heavy metal to
symphony orchestras."

As long as they still sell ear plugs at the bar...

That sounds great. Now, here's what Nashville has been up to:

http://www.nashvillesymphony.org/main.taf?p=15,4

It opens next month, I think. It's very much a "box within a box"
design. It appears to be designed along the lines of the Concertgeboux
(sp?) or the Vienna Opera House, i.e. a shoebox design with boxes on
the side walls. It's supposed to have state-of-the-art acoustics.
What's interesting is that it has a seating area directly behind the
stage on risers. That seems weird to me. At first, when I saw the
photos, I thought it was for a choir (and I assume that it can be used
for that purpose).

There will be no heavy metal shows at this baroque venue, although i
could see certain rock acts possibly working there. However, we
already have the Ryman around the corner from it for that sort of
show. This is pretty much a classical venue where the rich cowgirls
can rattle their spurs instead of their jewelry.

That looks great! I guess behind the stage seating is more common in
Europe; I think Davies in San Francisco and the new one in Los Angeles
have it.

Austin has an opera house under construction that will also host the
symphony. Unfortunately, the budget drawn up during the high-tech bubble
had to be cut by about a third after the crash. Still, it will have a
shoebox hall and be less cavernous than the multi-use auditorium on the
UT campus that currently hosts the opera, the symphony and touring
Broadway shows.
