Default Mega Distortion: Tube or diode

I have a question.

Is the mega distortion artists get "like justice for all- metallia,
whereever I may roam- Metallica, PainKiller- Judas Priest" done by tubes or
diodes? If it is tubes, do they make the tubes Clip? or just overdriven (a
bit distorted). If tubes are clipped, why don't they sound like solid state?

The answer is most likely tube clipping but today it's probably simulated in
DSP. Diodes aren't used as a musical effect except rarely in extreme instances.

Tubes clip more 'softly' than transistors / ICs etc because of their transfer
characteristics. They also distort more in typical 'normal ' use.

http://www.allmetallica.com/info/equipment/kirk.php

Mostly valve amps, and a heap of pedals, some SS, some valve, some DSP.

Valves are easier to play.

Hendrix was into germanium diodes, I think.

cheers, Ian

**A common misconception. It is (mostly) Global NFB which causes hard
clipping. Pentodes, for instance, have a nasty transfer characteristic.

They also distort more in typical 'normal ' use.

**True enough, but only because they usually have less gain to play with. It
has nothing much to do with the devices themselves. More to do with output
transformers, phase shift and Dollars.

Hendrix was into germanium diodes, I think.

Jimi used a Fuzz-Face into various Marshall, Fender and Sunn valve
amplifiers.

No diodes in his Fuzz-Face, just Germanium transistors.

It wasn't an informed decision - he didn't have the CHOICE of Silicon.

Now, due to Germanium transistor scarcity, the harder sound of Silicon is
the norm in distortion boxes.

Thanks.

I only remembered germanium because it's a good word. Sounds like the essence
of pure meaning. I was looking for Omnium, but a bit of Germanium would be nice.

cheers, Ian

Arthur
Hence the popularity of tube screamers, rats, distortion+ and other
distortion devices. BTW they are all diode/IC based.....

And the "big guys" still use them in combination with big old badass
tube amps. OK some of them use DSP, but that´s not the majority of them

Jochen
