OK folks, these two companies are well-known for making high-quality,
audiophile-level amplifiers, without an extremely high price. The reason I came up with this question was a fairly silly one: I noticed that Telarc Records (based in Cleveland) has used both amps for monitoring its recordings at various times, and I wondered how different they really were. What do you think? Thanks, Adam |

What do you think? They are very different. The Brystons have a brash bipolar presentation, while the Thresholds are delicate, perhaps too delicate. |

I've heard amplifiers from both companies. Have you? No? Then you're ill informed, and ill-willed as well. |

Good enough for all of us. Amps and speakers mate differently and certain combinations are clearly audibly better. So even though two different amps my be indistinguishable in a DBT for a given set of speakers, it is certainly NOT true for all combinations. I assume it has to due with how well the amp handles impedance swings of a given speaker. |

Good enough for all of us. Amps and speakers mate differently Sometimes - usually sitatuions involving substandard amps. and certain combinations are clearly audibly better. Lots of different amps sound no different. So even though two different amps my be indistinguishable in a DBT for a given set of speakers, it is certainly NOT true for all combinations. Bad logic. The most that can be logically inferred is that it MAY not be true for all combinations. I assume it has to due with how well the amp handles impedance swings of a given speaker. A lot of amps do outstandingly good jobs of handing fairly nastly speaker loads. |

Lots of different amps sound no different. Of course, there are equivalence classes. |

Good enough for all of us. Amps and speakers mate differently and certain combinations are clearly audibly better. So some say and in very rare cases it might actually be true, but in general, it's not. A normal speaker with a normal load impedance, will mate with any well designed amplffer. So even though two different amps my be indistinguishable in a DBT for a given set of speakers, it is certainly NOT true for all combinations. I assume it has to due with how well the amp handles impedance swings of a given speaker. See above. Speakers with such problematic impedance swings are to be generally avoided. There are plenty of truly excelent sounding speakers with no such problems. Modern SS amps are able to deal with most speaker loads with no effort at all. |
