Firefighters inflamed over blatant hypocrisy of Bush's opening political TV
ad:

http://releases.usnewswire.com/GetRe...d=155-03032004

WASHINGTON, March 3 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The General President of the
International Association of Fire Fighters, AFL-CIO (IAFF), Harold
Schaitberger, issued the following statement today after President Bush
unveiled new political ads that use images of fire fighters in September 11,
2001 attacks for political gain:

-- As Bush Trades on Heroism of Fire Fighters, His Homeland Security Funding
Cuts Hurt Fire Fighters and Communities --

"I'm disappointed but not surprised that the President would try to trade on
the heroism of those fire fighters in the September 11 attacks. The use of
9/11 images are hypocrisy at its worst. Here's a President that initially
opposed the creation of the Department of Homeland Security and now uses its
first anniversary as cause to promote his re-election. Here is a President
that proposed two budgets with no funding for FIRE Act grants and still
plays on the image of America's bravest. His advertisements are disgraceful.

"Bush is calling on the biggest disaster in our country's history, and
indeed in the history of the fire service, to win sympathy for his campaign.
Since the attacks, Bush has been using images of himself putting his arm
around a retired FDNY fire fighter on the pile of rubble at ground zero. But
for two and a half years he has basically shortchanged fire fighters and the
safety of our homeland by not providing fire fighters the resources needed
to do the job that America deserves.

"The fact is Bush's actions have resulted in fire stations closing in
communities around the country. Two-thirds of America's fire departments
remain under-staffed because Bush is failing to enforce a new law that was
passed with bipartisan support in Congress that would put more fire fighters
in our communities. President Bush's budget proposes to cut Homeland
Security Department funding for first responders by $700 million for next
year and cuts funding for the FIRE Act, a grant program that helps fire
departments fund equipment needs, 33 percent by $250 million. In addition,
state and local programs for homeland security purposes were reduced $200
million.

"We're going to be aggressive and vocal in our efforts to ensure that the
citizens of this country know about Bush's poor record on protecting their
safety and providing for the needs of the people who are supposed to respond
in an emergency."

What were you saying about "Bush's" budget deficits?

Exactly. Do we really want the federal government deep into business
of funding local emergency response under the umbrella of "homeland
security"?
A slippery slope IMO.

The slope may be slippery, but they're spending money on
every other damn thing they can think of. If they're gonna
do the Homeland Security thing, they ought to do it right,
don't you think?

Running into a burning building to aid the trapped is a
noble and brave task, but it doesn't fall under my
definition of providing security. It's what is needed
when security has failed.
The firemans unions are getting just as guilty as many
to use 9/11 to grab their piece of the security pie.

Once the feds are involved in funding these local and state
activities, it will darned near impossible to get them out of
it. Even after we win the war on terrorism.

When did fire departments become Federalized?
What about that deficit you guys keep bitching about? Does that not
count when it's something YOU want?
Are these the same firefighters who took retirement after 9/11 to take
advantage of the rule that allows them to retire at some percentage of
the highest salary they recieved before retirement?
Or could it be it's just another in the endless stream of everything
that goes wrong is Bush's fault?

They certainly aren't spending money on making our borders more
secure.
Why aren't you upset about something that really would help our
country save money and jobs?

Oh that's right, you hope that once the illegals get here and suck off
the government tit their children born here, will vote Democrat.

You're crazy to bag on FDNY.

I'm not.

The families of 9/11 victims are criticizing the ads too:

http://www.nydailynews.com/front/sto...p-148587c.html

It's interesting because the ads are an effort to shift the blame for
the recession and 9/11 onto Clinton.

Clinton owns a huge amount of blame for 0/11.

Until now I had only heard this
hypothesis on RAO, but it looks like the Bush people are hoping most
people will accept it.

They should, if Clinton hadn't had his head up his ass or his dick in Monica,
he would have taken Bin Laden into custody when he was offered by the Sudanese.
Perhaps 9/11 would never have happened.

The Bush ads with the 9/11 backdrop are perfectly OK especially since Kerry is
using his Viet Nam service in his ads. This of course is better than running
on his record.
