Hello all,
I have a question about speaker stands or mounts. I have grown quite attached to my Spica TC-50's, "wedge" shaped bookshelf speakers, about 20 years old. They are currently on the floor. We have a baby at home who will soon be crawling & learning to walk. I'm concerned that he will fall into the speakers & rip the cones, so I want to get them off the floor. Are speaker stands sturdy? I'm concerned that he would pull the stands down on himself and really get hurt. I was also thinking of mounting them to the wall, but it would look pretty hideous. Also, due to the "wedge" shape, they would be pointing at the ceiling! Can anybody offer any advice in this department? Thanks! Jon in NJ |

These are fabulous speakers, and after 20 years, they still sound good. "wedge" shaped bookshelf speakers, about 20 years old. They are currently on the floor. If you're familiar with SA, they make extremely sturdy and heavy stands that no baby can knock over. Also, I remember the first time I heard the TC-50s, they were mounted on Gibraltar stands. These were basically just solid boxes that were extremely inert, and made the TC-50s look quite a bit like Wilson Watt/Puppies. I remember the dealer saying it was kind of insane to mount a pair of $550 speakers on $500 stands, but the combo was very impressive. I don't know if Gilbraltar is in business anymore, but you might be able to track down a pair on e-Bay, Audiogon, etc. If not, it might just be easier to build a couple of shadow boxes yourself. Make them out of MDF, put spikes on the bottom and Blu-Tak on the top, and it just might work. Boon |
