Default Xfrmrless Shures

I recently picked up a couple of PE54. According to the documentation,
the internal transformer brings them to high impedance. Since people
have been buzzing lately about taking the transformers out of SM57, I am
considering a similar surgery on the 54. Could I expect similar results?

I think these mikes are basically SM57s with the stand mount and with
a different transformer. The capsule should be an SM57 type pretty much.

You have three options:
1. I think if you take the transformer out, it will sound pretty much like
an SM57 with the transformer taken out.

2. I think if you keep the mike as-is, it will probably sound better into
a cheap console preamp than an SM57 will. There will be some high end
loss because of all those tiny little windings on the transformer
secondary but it'll be a better match for a Mackie input than an SM-57
will.

3. I think that if you replace the transformer with one taken out of an
SM57, it will sound just like an SM57. Shure did make an SM57 with
the right-angle mount... I think it was called an SM56 and it was great
for drum-miking.
