Hi,
Thank you to Arny, Unitron, fronobulax, Kalman, Bruce, and Joseph for all of your advice with regards to record changers. I managed to pick up a BIC 940 locally, this afternoon. With a couple shots of "jig-a-loo" graphite lubricant (home depot lock section), it performs flawlessly, maintains speed very well with its belt drive, and 24 pole synchronous motor. Right now I am testing it on the main stereo, and if I play a blank groove and crank up the volume, I can hear a small amount of rumble through the Tannoy's, but nothing awful. Whatever speakers end up in the console this unit will end up in will certainly not have response down to 31Hz like the Tannoys do, so I am not overly concerned. The tonearm tracks lightly, and very well, and overall this turntable is better than an old rim drive Garrard in just about every way. The next step in the project, is mounting the BIC into my RCA console, and then figuring out how to upgrade the speakers. I'm thinking of mounting satalite speakers (e.g. Minimus 7) where the original RCA 6x9's are (behind grill cloth obviously), and putting a small sub in the corner of the room, away from the console. I can't really think of a better way to decouple the turntable from the speakers, but I'm sure I'll come up with something. It's going to be fun getting something resembling hi-fi out of this old RCA console stereo - it's a decent piece of furniture, and it fits very well into my early 1960s house. Anyhow, thanks all for the advice, Max |
