Took my Mcintosh XR5's speakers to a recommended service center because
they had been sounding harsh (one of the woofers needed re-foaming) and
I quit listening to them. The quote back from the service guy was that
many of the drivers needed re-coned and I was quoted around $1000 for
the work to bring them up to spec. He said McIntosh does not refoam
speakers. They only do reconing.

I bought these speakers as a bachelor 30 yrs ago and now have 2 kids in
college. Should I sell these things for whatever I can get for them or
replace drivers one at a time over the next few years - are they even
worth it? Any places that can bring these babies up to sounding good
again without so much cost?

Any new speakers out their that will work well with my MA6100 mcintosh
integrated amp?

I miss my music sounding like it used to but I don't have that much $$.

I tried contacting the guy with the magnepan SMG's but he doesn't
respond. What to do?

You should consider refoaming the woofers yourself. It's not rocket
science.

Practice on an old valueless speaker first. You'll get the hang of it
very quickly.

I agree, that's exactly what Ken and Dan Drescher do - dumpster dive for old
crappy speakers, refoam the drivers so they "look good", and advertise for
some suckers to buy them.

Beats getting an education!
