RIP Henry Lewy
Oh, that's too bad, although we all have to go sometime I guess. And
Henry certainly led a full and productive life, no pun intended. I had the privilege of doing an album with Henry about 15 years ago. Artist named The Dark Bob, with Peter White on guitars and keys. It was mostly just the 4 of us in the studio, with Peter and I throwing around arrangement ideas and Henry sitting back on the couch, quietly smiling his Buddha smile. At one point Dark Bob got annoyed and basically told Peter and I to shut up already; he wanted Henry to do his magic producing thing. To which Henry replied, "I am!" What a great guy. The obituary said, "He lived in South America for a time in the 1950s, joined a circus and engineered a German invention called the Dancing Waters, which had 16 centrifugal pumps and colored lights. Audiences loved it, Lewy recalled in interviews over the years, but he didn't." Contrary to that, Henry told me that one of the great joys in his life had been playing that Dancing Waters light show, although I'm sure setting it up and breaking it down everyday was less of a thrill. But Henry said that he learned everything he needed to know about mixing music from playing the Dancing Waters, which apparently consisted of water jets and colored spot lights, which could be played from some kind of control console. The only other Henry Lewy story that comes to mind is that at the time I was also working a lot with a session drummer named Mike Huey, and there was an engineer around named Tom Dewey. Of course we joked around about getting them all together for a Huey, Dewey and Lewy production, but it never happened. RIP Henry. R.N. |
