The stereo recording which I poseted earlier about is complete (see link at
end if you care to know recording details) I made up a little diagram in paint to show the approximate instrument locations and you can see it at http://www.strandedsavvy.net/band_setup.jpg (note the piano actually was at full stick) It turned out okay, the stereo imaging is fantastic IMO, but there are definite level problems. The bass and sax are at a seemingly good level with respect to each other, the drums are quite loud and piano is very faint even though the drummer was playing as quietly as he could while I was hammering away on the keys. I didn't really spend any time beforehand researching what typical jazz quartet setups were so this was pretty improvised. Though I had brought my monitors and amp with me to check levels, due to unexpected time constraints there wasn't much chance to fiddle with instrument positions. I find myself scratching my head as to how I would do it differently though, considering the results. The drums were already pretty far back, the piano could have come closer to the mics but not without starting to hog the space infront of them. Any suggestions? Is this setup unorthodox?
