![]() I'm an audio newbie who with help from rec.audio.opinion (thanks again for which) recently put together a system with B&W dm602 s3 speakers and Rotel RA-1062 integrated amp. I'm very happy with this system, but am thinking of adding a subwoofer, preferably for $500 or less, mainly for enhancing the low end in orchestral music at low-to-moderate volume levels in a 12 x 12 foot room. I'm considering the B&W ASW600, in the belief that it would integrate well with the 602s. I'd appreciate any advice on the B&W subwoofer, or suggested alternatives. Thanks! |

IMO, a subwoofer is the single best and easiest improvement you can make to your audio system. There is no big secret to what makes a good one, it's the ability to move air and that means excursion. The best subwoofers IMO are those from Adire Audio, (either ready made or DIY), SVsubwoofers, PSB, and Hsu, provide the best bang for the buck. Also you need power to drive the sub and both Adire and SVS provide units that can be had with or without internal amps, but don't worry, there are some very affordable amps that can be used for subwoofers that will generate all the power you could possibly need. Here's one example: SVSsubwoofers cylinder sub model 16-46 is $479.00 add a Samson SX1200 amp (300wpc@8 ohms, 450wpc@4 ohms, and 1200wpc@ 4 ohms bridged mono) for $299.00 Yes this is above the price range you specified, but with this setup, you will not need an upgrade. The cylinder shape is much more sturdy than a regular box, and has a smaller footprint. The Samson amp is very sturdy and actually made for the pro audio market. Check out the websites for the other brands as well as the for SVS and SAMSON and see what's available, you should be able to meet your budget if it is firm, just remember that anything less than 12" woofers are not really subwoofers IMO, and will not likely get into the 20 HZ range, with any authority. |

There are others here who know far more about SWs than I do, but I would think that a variety of them should integrate well with your speakers, so I wouldn't limit myself to a B&W. Most of all I wanted say: welcome to the hobby, and I hope that you enjoy what can be a very pleasurable activity! |
