I am looking at investing in a pair of higher-end noise cancelling
headphones (Budget: $200-$300) and don't really know which brand to get. Would appreciate any suggestions. Here is how I will be using the headphones: 1) With my Delphi XM radio boombox at the office (I work in a cubicle on a crowded office floor and need to block out the chatter of co-workers, phones, etc.) 2) Also at home in my apartment. Noise-cancelling isn't so important here, but I want to be able to turn the music way up and jam out without getting lots of distortion, etc. 3) On rare occasion (3-4 times a year) with a portable set on an airplane. Genrally I prefer headphones that don't cover my whole ear and make me look like a test pilot, but I understand I may have to get bigger headphones in order ot get the best sound. So far I have heard of Sony Quietcomfort, BOSE, and Sennheiser Noise-cancelling headphones as possible options. Thanks!!!! -Ed |

The Sony were a bit better, but nothing spectacular. What you want to do is be able to drown out the whine of the engines on the plane - and it's a hard trick to do. I've not heard the Sennheiser, but they don't make junk either. |

If you want sound quality and ambient noise rejection, consider in-ear-monitor type headphones. To get your feet wet, stop by the local Circuit City and pick up a pair of Koss's "The Plug". Remarkably good-sounding for not much money, and a good indicator of how this market segment goes. However, this style of 'phones are not for everybody. If you want something that sounds better down the road, there is a while range of these going up to about $500 a pair. |

I tried the in-ear style and I agree they sound a bit better, and do block noise. But I never really liked having something stuck in my ears. -John |
