I can honestly say I've never enjoyed my collection of nearly 1000
Jazz CD's more than since I finished encoding all of them to my
computer as WMA9 192kbps files. Random, near instant access with
artist and title information has allowed me to finally listen to the
music I've paid for all these years in a way I never dreamed possible
playing from individual discs. Seems one usually grabs the same 10 or
15 CD's or listens to whatever the most recent purchases are. With a
music server you start listening to everything you own. I have a
60gb hard drive system in my car with a good portion of my
collection available and am in the process of re-encoding my library
in a lossless format as I'm so sold on the quantum leap it has made
in my utilization of my collection and the price of hard drives has
fallen so dramatically.

This guy is obviously NOT a music lover. He doesn't want to suffer through
complex delicate rituals to listen to the music he loves, he just wants to
listen to the music he loves.

"in a way I never dreamed possible"
Well, he never even listened to them at all before,
other than 10 or 15 out of the 1,000 cd's
I guess he was too stupid or lazy to deal with cd's.
Too much of a 'ritual', it is.

Well, don't forget how much time he put in making the transfers. He
needs to think he didn't waste the time. I must admit though that I
listen to music at home more often from my Nomad than from the actual
CD or LP.

I 've done exactly the same thing. Got a new pc, stuck in 4 x 160gb
hard drives and ripped my 700 or so cds as WAV files using EAC. An
optical out connects to a DAC and into my STAX phones and the sound is
awesome - at leaste the equal of any CD player I've ever owned (up to
£500ish). The convenience and ease of use is incomparable. Once you
get into creating playlists etc, there's no going back.

if you are going to listen to digital, what better way than straight
from a PC, Vinyl ripped to hard disk sounds particularly good and the
accessibility of hundreds (or thousands) of tracks at a click or two
means you can really rediscover those forgotten little gems and can
track-hop like a good 'un!

The only drawback is the background noise from your computer. I live
in a very quiet apartment. Even though I've literally buried my CPU
with mattresses, My desktop is still quite audible when my stereo is
not cranking. That is what makes my Nomad so cool, although scrolling
with that little display is not as nice as using a big monitor.
