Default Hey Marc - The Shins CD is in!

Well, just got Chutes Too Narrow by The Shins, Marc. Delightful! You
can tell that they're well-versed in all of the left-of-center pop
things like XTC, but they remind me of someone specific that I can't
quite put my finger on, especially on Mine's Not A High Horse. His
voice sounds like someone but I just can't place it. And the first
part of that soaring keyboard riff is stolen directly from a song that
I can't remember (it *will* come to me though). These groups know how
to turn a melodic phrase, *that's* for sure. Derivative? Well yeah...

I've already worn out the song that originally attracted me to them,
So Says I. I'd better back away before I ruin it.

So you say Inverted World is even better? I hope so because I just
bought a sealed vinyl copy of it. g

That's kind of the thing about them, that they sound so familiar, but you can't
put your finger on why.

Not possible, I've found. I could listen to "One By One All Day" from the
first album over and over all day long.

You'll see. It's amazing. Although Yustabe didn't care for it at all when he
heard it. He called it annoying. I almost beat him severly for that.

Yeah, like The Pernice Brothers, although their hooks are a little
easier to identify.

However, I figured out who the first song sounds like - Jane's
Addiction! I still haven't figured out that keyboard riff in the
second song though though. It's *right* there but I can't pull it to
the forebrain.

I'm looking forward to checking it out.

It's the beating that makes it art (apologies to Aaron Sorkin).

You know who I really miss right now? Elliott Smith. sigh. There was
a little bit in Saint Simon that sounded *just* like him. The way that
Mercer sings the word pretend. JUST like him. Weird how little bits of
pop can trigger emotions, eh?

I read a review before buying "Chutes" that made the Perry Farrell comparison,
so when I heard it the first time I made the connection instantly. I'm not
sure about the second song, though.

I was pretty bummed about Elliott Smith, too.
