I've just toasted the bass units on my Tannoy 632s, and having spent 8
years desperately trying to avoid the lure of the hi-fi shops, I find myself seeking a replacement set! Any recommendations? I was thinking of spending up to 550 pounds. I have an Arcam Alpha 6+ amp. (c.50W RMS/channel) and Alpha One CD player. The speakers are stand mounted (with stands that sadly can't be reused as they're unique to the Tannoys). They are mounted in a high ceiling room of approx. 12x12ft, 30cm clear from solid walls, in the recesses either side of the fireplace. I was thinking along the lines of Monitor Audio or JMLabs, though whether stand or floormounts, not too sure just yet. The Tannoys and the setup lacked bass, but were otherwise great - forward sound stage / punchy. The JMLab 714s IMHO lacked the clarity vibrance that I was looking for. The JMLab 806Ss are the best I have heard yet with great separation. I'm after getting better bass (from floorstanders?) but want to keep the clarity associated with standmounts. I don't want a set of speakers that are going to blow up again (Tannoys were being driven with volume dial 50 percent of the way round) so was concerned the 806Ss are rated at 75W max. |

I'd look into a subwoofer. Tannoys are going to be hard to beat in that price range, even new. Your used pair is probably better than what you could buy today for your budget. |
