Hello all,
Just one of my Little Question.. Here it is: What is your prefered music
album (CD or LP). You know that's the one that you will bring with you
on a desert island. Of course this desert island must have electricity
so you can use your Hi-Fi gear.

I would have a hard time with that, but taking this logically, it would
probably be Scritti Politti's "Songs To Remember", for me. Because as
advertised, they are songs to remember. I bought it when it first came
out, and its the only album from that period that I still listen to
today. Its full of style, depth and soul. It has a bit of everything;
jazz, funk, reggae, soul, pop, you name it. I have both the original LP
and the original CD version, and of course, it would be the LP version
for me. I've compared the two and there's no contest as to which is
superior and more faithful and accurate to the original sound of the
music.

I'd actually have to take three, and three pieces of equipment to play them
on plus the amplifiers and speakers (don't like headphones for long term
listening).

1) "Cats" - the original cast album on LP

2) "The Harry Nilsson Anthology" on CD

3) "The Verdi Requiem" via Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra and Temple
Choir on 7-1/2" open reel tape.

With those three I could like on a desert island, so long as my hut had
walls and electricity.

But wait, where's Beethoven? Where's Mozart? Where's the Beatles? Where's
Louie? Where's......

I love the tunes and I love the poems. And I'm a cat-lover. Enough said?

2) "The Harry Nilsson Anthology" on CD

To my mind, perhaps the most underappreciated and creative pop/rock musician
in the US over the last fifty years. Wears better than the Beatles, and
that's saying a lot. Besides, I get to slip in two disks, this way.....
:=)

3) "The Verdi Requiem" via Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra and

Sublime and uplifting music and a superb performance. I never get tired of
it.

Beethoven's 6th
Leibowitz, London Symphony (I think), 1961
Readers Digest Records (LP)
Chesky (cd)

cause it makes my blues go away.

If it had to be just ONE:
Grainger: Lincolnshire Posy/Rogers: Three Japanese Dances/Strauss:
Serenade Op.7 Fennell/Eastman Wind Ensemble Mercury

If I could expand to three:
Mozart: Requiem Hogwood
Handel: Messiah Pearlman/Boston Baroque Telarc

To add one last one:
Beatles: Abbey Road

Thank for your answer. I will try to find this album in my area. For me
there is several choice: Beyond The Missouri Sky by Charlie Haden and
Pat Metheny. Duality by Lisa Guerrard. L'Heptade by Harmonium, Gustav
Mahler 5th Symphony. The Complete Nocturnes and Impromptus of Frédéric
Chopin played by Angela Hewitt.

And I forgot the latest CD from Willow, a young jazz singer from
Montréal . I saw her in the Savoy room at the Metropolis in Montréal and
it was simply wonderfull. She is extremely talented and she love singing
for her public. So her CD will go to the desert Island too.

AL Kooper Mike Bloomfield: Sooper Session
Bruce Springsteen: Born To Run
Mannheim Steamroller:Fresh Aire 3

Wow, a point of agreement.
I learned bass playing from Albert's Shuffle.
I have a great Bloomfield collection. You might also
enjoy early Fleetwood Mac w/ Peter Green.

start switching from blues to rock
subtract Peter Green
record an album
subtract Jeremy Spencer
add Christine Perfect (later Christien McVie)
record an album
add Robert Welchrecord about 2 albums
subtract Danny Kirwan
record 3 or 4more albums, one with an additianal male vocalist
subtract Robert Welch
add Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks

Got the reissue that has the versions with and without the horns added
plus some live performances.

I've found some of the old FM stuff with Peter Green available for
download at e-music.
I've been downloading some stuff to compare CD vs. MP3 and can tell no
difference.

Hell, I can tell differences between various cd masterings
of the same album.
Chances are, you were listening to a cd of one mastering
and an mp3 version of another mastering and couldn't
tell the difference. But my comparison was sighted,
so it was useless, Oh,..... wait a minute.....
your comparison was also sighted.

For my money Heifetz is the very best, I have a recording of him
playing The Swan that will make grown men cry. On CD of course.

CD's aren't "that" bad.

Actually it was blind, I had my wife run the 2 sources, one a CD I
owned and the other an MP3 of the same music burned to a CD.

Like any other source, only as good as the master, thte CD is just
always going to be more faithful to that master and not have the added
noise present on LP.

Hmmm, kinda surprised not to find any Beethoven, Bach, Rachmaninoff, or
Sibelius in your list. But everybody's taste is different.

Any comments on the work of Loris Tjeknavorian? I have enjoyed 2 works
he did on the Chalfon label, Sheherazade and Beethoven Symphony No. 5
in C-minor, both on Chalfont LP's.

Herbie Hancock - Head Hunters 1973.
Because Hancock has been one of the greatest influences on my playing.

Weather Report - Mr Gone 1978.
Because of Pastorius (Punk Jazz!), Zawinul and Shorter.

J.S. Bach - Brandenburgse Konzerte - Harnoncourt, 1994.
Because Bach done by Harnoncourt brings tears to my eyes.

Faure - Requiem - Tilson Thomas.
Might not be the best performance, but it's the only one I have.
Because this music says it all.

It's hard to pick just 6, of course. I don't know how I would live
without the Bach Cantatas (which I'm presently collecting) for example.
I chose my six based on not only the works, but the performances as
well. For example, limited to six, I would't ordinarily include the
Dvorak, the JD just GOES OFF on it, and the passion of that performance
would be valuable on the desert island!
:-)

Any comments on the work of Loris Tjeknavorian?

I only know him from his recordings of his countryman Khachaturian,
which are very good.

I have enjoyed 2 works

If Sander likes the Fauré, he should check out the
Duruflé Requiem. Transcendent music. There's a
great Robert Shaw performance, coupled with the
Fauré, on Telarc. (CD only, Jenn - sorry.)

Thanks for the recommendation John.
I am familiar with the Durufle, but I can't recall which version I
have. A wonderful piece of work as well.
I'll have to check the "obsolete LPs" boxes in the basement. :-)

Because Hancock has been one of the greatest influences on my playing.

yeah! a great fun album.
I saw doing him acoustic duets with Chick Corea

Weather Report - Mr Gone 1978.
Because of Pastorius (Punk Jazz!), Zawinul and Shorter.

A great album. overall, but I liked Vitous better than Pastorius.
More musical, less showy IMO
