good system for a 95 saturn?
let me first start off by saying that I know absolutely nothing about car audio, I'm asking this for a friend who doesn't have working internet at the moment my friend bought a used 95 saturn, and the speakers are shot (one motorboats like crazy, one just makes hissing noises, etc). he's looking to pay about 400 for a new set, no subs. he says he's not going for anything fancy, just a decent replacement. he asked me to figure out what he should buy, but I really have no idea what to look for or where to look. can someone help me out and give suggestions on brands, or tell me what stores I should go to? thanks in advance -- - Quartz - there are 10 types of people in the world: those who get this joke, and those who don't. |

Speakers are a very personal preference. Best thing to do is run down to a few
local stores that sell car audio and ask them what sizes of speakers fit that car. Don't ask the sales person about prices or what he/she thinks is good. Get them to turn on whatever speakers they have that will fit your car and without looking at them, list listen to them and note the two that you like the best. Then see how much they cost, if you picked the more costly one as choice #1 ask yourself if it sounded that much better then choice #2 to pay the price difference. Do this at 2 or 3 different stores, so that you can hear a few different brands of speakers. Once you have your top two or three speakers choices, factor in the cost difference vs sound quality, and you'll have your answer as to what is best for you. Also, is that $400 going to include installation, or is that strictly for
the speakers? Speaker installation may take a chunk out of that if you get them at certain places. If you and your friend are not uncomfortable taking the door panels off on some random Saturday to install new speakers, I would factor in installation to that cost as well. I would recommend doing it yourself though. It's interesting what you can find when you start tearing your car up. And actually the money you save on installing it yourself could be put towards some deadener. www.sounddeadenershowdown.com -- - AUSTIN BECKER "Captain Howdy" wrote in message ... I'm pretty sure just the speakers. we're all pretty handy, and have done work on our own cars before. but that's a good question, I should ask him about that. -- - Quartz - there are 10 types of people in the world: those who get this joke, and those who don't. |

Pick up some low power speakers at Crutchfield and do a self-install. It won't pound but it will sound good and clean for $150. You might have to stretch the door speaker baskets with a heat gun but it's otherwise an easy installation. |

good system for a 95 saturn?
I just spent 400 bucks on my audio system for my 91 Saturn that cost me
50 bucks, hehe. My Saturn has four 6 1/2's all around. In my opinion, I would get a cheap amp from ikesound or profileaudio, get a set of components for the front a pair of 2-ways for the rear.. What I got: 2 400 watt Profile amps, one 2 channel for the subs, one 4 channel for the speakers = 100 bucks for the pair Pair of Kenwood 50 watt RMS components = 85 bucks Pair of Polk DB 650's 60 watt RMS = 85 bucks 2 10" subs in an enclosure from a friend, bartered 50 bucks worth of stuff. My old Sony cdx-mp30 HU 50x4 still cranking. 50 bucks worth of wire, in line fuses and lots of electrical tape Hope to have it all hooked up this weekend, amps are on the way........ |

good system for a 95 saturn?
I have a '93 Saturn and just purchased 4 new speakers for it. I don't
know that much about the '95, but I suggest you go to www.sounddomain.com, if for no other reason, they will quickly show you what speakers are an exact fit for that car. They also have better prices than Crutchfield. I bought Polk audio and Pioneer. All four cost under $200, including shipping. Now, here are the problems: Saturn's use this odd GM standard of 6-3/4" speakers. 6-1/2" will fit, but require an adapter. There's many companies making speakers for this size, so why not get exact fit? Unfortuantely, Sound Domain refers to these as 7" speakers, but the manufacturers call them 6-3/4". GM also has this bizarre type of speaker connector that you won't be able to figure out how to remove by looking at it. I just cut them off. So you should plan on getting new connectors to go with the speakers. Pioneer includes these, Polk does not. Another problem I found is that the stock speaker wire is 22 gauge, and if you aren't familiar with wire gauges, that's like telephone wire, NOT home speaker wire, which is normally 18, 16, or even 14 gauge. Smaller gauge is fatter wire. I plan on rewiring soon.
