Default Testing a Head End Unit Before Installing

I have this used Jensen CD3010X model car cd/radio. I would like to
see if it works before going through the trouble of installing, alot of
these have problems. I hooked up the red lead (ignition) to the + lead
of a 12v battery and the black to the negative, got no response. There
is another lead on the radio that is yellow and is called Battery "B+."
This unit claims to be "12V negative ground," does this have to be
powered up a certain way? Can I do this with a battery? The radio
would be going into a 1990 Plymouth Voyager LE.
