I have a small room (10' x 12') and I want to get a good set of speakers for
it. Right now I have a set of computer speakers (2 sats/sub configuration) and they sound good for what they are, but they don't really fill the room. My bed is at the end of the room, so all the music sounds like it's coming from the right side when I am in bed. I position the speakers so that they're centered around me when I'm at my desk. There is also a lot of crap in the room, which will absorb the sound. Anyone have any suggestions? Is it possible to get some "high end" sound with low power requirements for cheap? Most of the stuff that is "high end" seems to be overpowered for this room. I've read that some people like surround speakers for music because they fill the room better. Should I get a 4 or 5 speaker system and position them around the room? MB |

I would suggest looking at the smallest Martin Logan speakers.

He SAID he had a small room, dickweed.
Rather than waste his money on some audiophool product that will send his amp into oscillations at high frequencies and blow up the amp, he should get something good like a Bose AcoustiMass 15 II system. And he's got to have an electrical outlet for each Martin Logan to plug in to - Do you think he wants all these wires running around in his room? The Bose AcoustiMass 15 II speakers sound equally great in a small room and are an easy load for any amp or receiver to drive. (snip drivel) Another poster with more intelligence posted: I would suggest looking at the smallest Martin Logan speakers. These are superb choices. Their hybrid planar speakers are not electrostatics, but do sound much better than most conventional speakers. 5 ohms as well. I spoke last spring to one of their marketing people who was in my favorite audio shop that day. The said it was designed with an $800 consumer 6 ohm capable amplifier in mind. I pestered him some more and correctly guessed, which he verified, that it was designed with a Denon 3802 during the testing phases. He then showed me an impedance graph and it was nearly flat at 5-6 ohms. I asked him and he said that most 6 ohm speakers dip to 4 or 3 ohms at their lowest impedance and any good 6 ohm amplifier will be capable of dealing with this, so a nearly flat 5 ohm impedance is easy by comparison. http://www.martinloganowners.com/ - a great online group and information place. The model in question is the Mosaic. They also make a slightly smaller Montage, but the Mosaic has a planar midrange as well, which is a night and day improvement. |
