Nobody had any feedback on the Alpine 171a's? I am new to the car
stereo world and was hoping that someone could help. If not, no
biggie. Thanks anyway.

Gosh, Sam, sorry. I don't think we were blowing you off, it's just that I
for one don't have much experience with Alpine speakers. I DO know that
Alpine has a great reputation for quality so chances are they will hold-up
just fine.

But, truth be told, we "audio snobs" tend to look down our nose at Japanese
speakers (I know I am guilty of this). You will find that the more
desirable separates come from makers like Focal, Diamond, MB Quart, ADS,
Boston Acoustics, JL, Rainbow, Audax, and even more esoteric manufacturers.
That's not to say that those Alpine's aren't good separates, it's just
historically Japanese speakers have tended to be inferior.

just quietly on alpine's, r-types are marketed as higher end then
s-types, but i've found my s-type subs and front splits to be twice as
good as what my old r-types were. so once you get past their cheap
stuff, into the middle-end sort of stuff, watch out at what people are
trying to tell you, as often as not the cheaper option will actually be
better in all the right ways (quality, durability, what they can
handle, etc) until you hit the high-end spectrum of the range (x-types
and the like)

Wow, well your old Type R's must not be anywhere near what last years Type
R's were like. I know several people with Type S and Type R, and the Type
are, hands down, blow the Type S out of the water. Matter of fact, a friend
of mine has 2 10" type s subs in his truck in a custom box, with full rated
power going to each, and his dad has a type r (a single) 10" sub in his
mustang convertible that absolutely SMOKES his type S 10"s. 1 type are
blows 2 type s' away. The Type R's can handle every bit of their RMS
rating, and more. http://www.thecaraudiobox.com/eventpicsandvids/ go
there.. a single alpine type R 15" at 150.7 db Anyway, I'm gonna hop off of
Alpines nuts now, but the Type R's are far superior to the Type S though.

Anyhow, if you do go alpine, stay away from Type E, as that stuff is not as
much as you can get for the price in other speakers.

Thank you all so much! I will be doing some research into the other
brands that you have named. The Type S sounded very nice when I
auditioned them, actually better sounding than some Infinity Kappa
separates that I was told were good.

Thank you all again!!! I am sure that I will have more questions in
the near future.

I know that the alpine type r subs have changed 100% in 2005 vs 2004 models.
The only thing that stayed the same was the cone. The 2005 models also handle
an extra 200 watts rms. I've been driving a pair of the swr-1222d's with an
underrated 1500watt rms MTX 1501D and they are load as hell.

Another reason people here are hesitant to answer questions like this,
is that with components especially, everyone has different tastes. What
sounds great to me, may sound like utter garbage to you. The ideal way
to go about it is to go listen to as many sets as possible using
material you are familiar with, powered similarly to how you'd power them.
