Default Click in Signals

Hi folks...

Well, I've been trying to deal with this problem ever since it started
getting colder and people are turning on their portable heaters ...(at
least I THINK that's the prob).

I have an RME Multiface hooked up to my computer (P4 3.1G) and I would
ALWAYS get random click (about every 7 min) into my audio signal. I can
even hear the clicks through my Tascam M3500 mains/headphones...

I did a test and recorded all 8 analog ins from my RME, and I would get
random clicks on random tracks for each recording...

So, do you think it's an AC thing? I've been in the building for over 8
months and only started getting this problem in the last month or so. I
have two line conditioners on both my racks and the computer is also
going through a UPS and line conditioner.

Any tips? Should I pay to rewire the breaker panel so I get my own AC
source? (instead of sharing it with the 2nd floor bathroom and hallway
outlets and who-knows-what-else?

thanks a million!

My monitor shuts itself off if there is no keyboard or mouse activity after
about 7 minutes or so, and when it does I get a glitch. So long as I at
least move the mouse once in a while everythings OK. I've turned off all
Powersave features but can't seem to stop the monitor blanking. So I just
move the mouse. Might be worth experimenting along these lines.

I should add that when there is recording/playback happening the monitor is
prevented from turning off, though the Powersave routine (I presume) still
causes a glitch. Moving the mouse prevents the routine invoking for another
7 minutes.

Connect a line pwered AM radio and listen for the click there too.

If it is an AC line EMI issue it will probably also come through the AM
radio.

It could be too many other things to sink $ into rewiring just yet. Try a
different computer or interface or recording device if you can. If the
problem still exists, then there's a much greater chance of your AC supply
being the culprit. But as Gareth said, there are plenty of computer
possibilites to track down first.

I feel your pain.
Don't overlook a powersave option in the cmos- the hotkey hardware setup
available before the system boots.

Thanks, tried all that, but this is a PC running Windows after all. I learnt
years ago that you can't explain any of its behaviour logically.

Thanks folks!

Well, I think a full computer reformat would be a cheaper solution
first. I'll do the AM radio test too while formatting. And then only
install the RME interface and Cubase SX and try the 15
minute-all-inputs-recording clicky test!
I'll keep everyone posted as to my results.

thanks again

Although, the clicks are still audible when I have Cubase in stop mode
(just sitting there, no playback, no record). Would that still mean it
may be a PCI bus thing?

And the clicks only get recorded when using the analog inputs on the RME
Multiface, and not the ADAT ins...?
