Default VD Vs. DVD under $500

I need to replace MY CD player.
I was wondering if the CD player would perform
better in music player than a DVD player in the $300 range?

Any opinions?
Aware of any such comparisons?

Thanks

I chose the following option, and YMMV, of course:

I purchased a cheap Sony DVD/SACD player and then I bought a used Adcom
GDA-700 HDCD DAC cheap on AudioGon. I wanted something with HDCD
capability as more CD's these days have HDCD encoding on them and I
personally think HDCD-encoded CDs sound much better played back through
an HDCD decoder.

Anyway, the DVD's look and sound great on the Sony, SACD sounds great on
the Sony, and the regular CD's played back through the Adcom DAC sound
better than regular CD's played back through the Sony. And the HDCD CDs
played back through this system are almost as good a a great vinyl
system (yes, I like vinyl better).

Total investment was about $450.

IMO, to get both good CD & DVD playback in a single unit you'll have to
spend more than $300 and buy something beginning with an Arcam if you're
shopping new. So my advice is to consider other options, if possible.

My personal experience has been you have to belly up to at least the
$1,000 price level in DVD players to get reasonably good CD playback and
the Arcam line has garnered some great reviews for their products in a
variety of publications, so I'm assuming there is some merit to Arcam
products.

Perhaps some fellow Arcam DVD/CD owners can chime in here and add to
this thread? I myself would be interested in your thoughts as my own
impressions currently of Arcam are very positive.

I just purchased an Apex DVD player that will play (in addition to
DVDs) CD, CD-R, CD-RW, mp3 CDs, wma CDs. In the video realm, it plays
DVD, DVD-R, DVD+R, JPEG photos, Kodak picture CDs. All this for $35 +
tax. Look in Sears for the Apex AD-1225.

Drawbacks? Sure. No front panel display.

Normy, you are a genius.

And on the plus side, it sends a message to all those profiteering
manufacturers, those cushy high-end salons where they gouge you just

spendthrift consumers who give Scrooges a bad name, and those
dastardly engineers who build equipment to last.

Careful not to drop your pen on the Apex, Norm -- you could break the

Norm, I hate to say it but you may have over spent.

A Wal*Mart flyer just showed up offering the Apex AD-1130W for $29.87, with
remote but again with no display on its front panel.

Mmm consider the Pioneer 563A... does SACD, DVD-A, views jpegs, plays
progressive scan movies... does just about everything! Google to find good
reviews about this unit everywhere! The sound quality is on par with my
Sony SACD player, I'd say.

I think it retails for $200, though you can easily get discounts (or buy on
eBay new) and lower it to $150.

Enjoy!

You get what you pay for. The output quality is not up to par with nicer
players (cheap DACs and not the best decoder either), and it's not
proressive scan either. Most "shinco clones" (apex, etc.) have pretty
useless mp3 players (no long name support, let alone id3 tag support...).
Cheap build, lots of them die in a year or two, etc... Again, you get what
you pay for.

If you're just looking for any dvd player that works - on a budget, it might
be the best thing for you.

Circuit sells the Pioneer 563A for $170.99, not bad for a universal
player. Is it possible it doesn't matter whether SACD or DVD-A wins?

You have to factor in the fact that technology marches on, and price/
performance of digitally-based gear has a long track record of improving
steadily.

As time marched on the performance of cheap DACs has improved dramatically.

and it's not proressive scan either.

Reinaldo, the discussion is about replacing a CD player. That makes video
performance irrelevant to the discussion. Check the first post in the thread
if you need to refresh your memory.

Furthermore, if you want an Apex player with progressive scan, there is
always the AD-2500 and AD-2600 that do have progressive scan and still cost
way under $100 - about $70.

Most "shinco clones" (apex, etc.) have
pretty useless mp3 players (no long name support, let alone id3 tag
support...). Cheap build, lots of them die in a year or two, etc...

I have a number of friends that bought first generation Apex players and
find that they are still useful and this is what more than two years later.
They didn't die early as you just claimed they all would. I admit it, I was
prejudiced against Apex and spent a little more and bought a Pioneer DV-525
which also still works fine. But I now have a cheap Apex for use elsewhere
in the house.

Again, you get what you pay for.

I get this feeling Reinaldo that you actually have no personal experience
with Apex players, no statistical information about their reliability, no
reliable reviews of their sound quality from factual sources, and are just
posting about your prejudices against them because they are cheap.

There's a very real possibility that neither DVD-A nor SACD will win and
three years from now CDs will either still be selling strongly, or they will
have their sales significantly crimped by downloads.

All,

Thanks for all the responses.
I am really biased to get better audio quality first with
DVD as an added bonus, if I can get it without perceptible
reduction on audio quality.

I was leaning towards a NAD 541 and then found that
they have a wide range of DVD players but do not give detail
audio specs...

What do you think?
What is your best CD player for under $500?

Thanks!
