I need to get an audio interface for my mac laptop.
Has anyone tried or heard anything about the
Alesis mixer, the multimix 16 firewire or the Mackie
onyx firewire mixer. They seem too good to be true.

I have the firewire card for my Tascam DM 24 and it
works great.

The main problem that I see with them is that there are only two returns
from the PC. What if you want to process something outboard while mixing?
You won't be able to monitor at the same time. That's my problem with them,
you might not have that problem.

A small mixer for remote situations swounds great.
Otherwise it is the FRirepod or Hercules or Delta or
somrthing like that.

Thanks for any advice or experiences.

I have an Onyx firewire card. It works fine for what it does, which is
send the mic premaps (pre-everything) and the main mix to the computer.
If I'm bringing a mixer to do live sound and want to record the show as
well, it's excellent. If I wanted to use the mixer in the studio in the
same way as I use my Soundcraft multitrack recording console it's a
no-go.

If you're going to be interfacing with an existing PA console for your
live recordings, it'll work, but I'd rather carry something much
smaller since I don't need (nor can I use, in that situation) the other
capabilities of the mixer.

Look at Metric Halo's Mobile IO units, and MOTU's Traveler, in addition
to the FW output consoles. The Onyx works fine. The convertors are
mundane but they are no worse than many commonly available convertors.
The Mobile IO has significantly better conversion, IMO.
