Other reasons for the superior performance of idler drive turntables are
related to the effect of gravity waves on two loosely coupled masses that exist in belt drive turntables, namely, the platter and the motor. Because these are loosely coupled, the spatial distortion caused by gravity waves propagates along the belt in a nonlinear fashion. This can be demonstrated by use of a gold leaf electrometer to measure the differential charge buildup between the platter and the motor. It has bee repeatably observed that phonon quantitization of surface wave propagation along the surface of the belt is distorted by this buildup. Idler drive turntables suffer no such defect, due to the absence of a long freestanding surface to support phonon quantitization. In the case of the direct coupled turntable, quantitization of the magnetic field occurs, but has not been explained. One possibility is isostatic compression of the motor bearings due to micromolecular flattening of the bearing contact points. Other possibilities include a bandgap quantitization of the tribologic axis points, caused by adiabatic thermal distortion of the motor structure. With the limited budget for turntable research, it is doubtful the causes of progressive, aperiodic rumble in direct drive turntables will be resolved. One thing is clear: the idler drive turntable, by virtue of a simple and proven mechanism, provides the ultimate in quality while mechanical analysis stays completely within the classical realm. It is anticipated that with further development, this design will result in vinyl reproduction that exceeds in quality both SACD and DVD-A. In conclusion: the future of the idler drive turntable has an unlimited horizon. |
