Default Turntable cartridge recommendation

Just curious here. Got a Rega Planar 3 (quite old, but with the RB300 arm)
and getting a stylus for my Shure V15 mk.IV is all but impossible now, so
it's time for a new cartridge.

Two that I'm strongly considering are the Goldring 1006 (or 1012), and the
Rega Super Bias (or Elys).

Any thoughts on these? Should I be looking elsewhere instead?

Colin, Are you "sure'"(lol) there's no available replacement stylus for
your type 4 shure?

Go to the Needle Doctor's website, www.needledoctor.com and check it
out. I would assume you know what model number you need for your
particular cartridge.
I went there, and it looks to me that they have what you need, but don't
quote me on it. Also prices look sorta scary for a stylus! Hope this
helps, Mark

Nope. They've got the replacement stylus for the Mk. V cartridge, but that's
not compatible with the Mk. IV. Best I've found is a third-party replacement
that's of unknown quality. I'm not at all convinced it's worthwhile, given
the age of the cartridge.

Hi Colin, Sorry buddy, but I myself was a bit unsure exactly which
model stylus your Shure Cartridge called for, and thought one of them
was the right one.

I feel your pain, as I myself still own 2 bought new (about 27 years
ago) Shure V-15 Type III Cartidges.

Over the last couple of months, I seen a couple of Shure VN-35E NOS
replacement Stylus' for the Type III on Ebay, and they go for quite a
bit of change. I think one went for about $145.

Although I've cared meticulously for both very well over the years, I'm
sure one of them would've benefitted with a new Stylus.

Ebay might be one option for you, as if you feel your Shure is due for a
replacement, it's sort of a sin to let it sit. One other option would be
to place it on ebay, or sell it outright to offset the cost of a new
cartridge of your choice.

On occasion, one can be at the right place at the right time on Ebay,
and get a fair deal.

About 4 years ago, I was lucky to acquire two brand new in the box never
played NOS Audio Technica "Quad" Cartridges off Ebay for $165.

The AT-15S, and the then top of the line AT-20SLa, (which was reputedly
said to be a "cherry picked" version of the AT-15S.)

Both are killer cartridges, and was always one that I felt had great
similar playback-sonic qualities to the Vintage V-15's, and both with
their Shibata Sylus' also worked great for regular Stereo Playback.

Best of luck Colin! Mark

I bought the two Audio Technica Cartridges for a Vintage Denon DP-2550
Table (Do have two vintage Quad Sansui Recievers)

My main turntable, I'm using a VPI HW-19 with Audioquest PT-8 Arm, Benz
Glider Hi-Output Cartridge (2.2Mv) and McCormack Micro Phono
Phono-Pre-amp.

I think the Glider set me back $550 new. ($750 list) Mark
