Recently purchased 688 will FF and RW but not Play and hence not
Record.
Any ideas on why and how to repair?

Missing interlock plug?
Beyond that, it's going to be a matter of getting out the manual and
checking out the control path from the button to the solenoid.

On a lot of these machines, the solenoids themselves stick because
the lubrication gets gummed up. If that's happening, you should
get a complete cleaning and lube done because it's a sign that nobody
has been doing proper maintenance on the machine for a while.
