where's the THRILL in fine audio?
Could someone answer me this: Where's the thrill in fine audio
reprodcution? I read somewhere that some guy got "a thrill out of the illusion that [he] could step forward and shake John Coltrane's hand". Is that what thrill's you about high quality audio reproduction? Or is audio a backdrop to some of life's other great delights - parties, sex, vacuuming... You could say that I'm a thrill researcher. I've been conducting interviews with people about their thrill experiences at the website www.chromo11.com. Feel free to discuss my question here [though I may not be around much as I'm on about 100 groups at once], but if anyone feels they've something to say outside your group, then please visit the site and answer a series of thoughtful questions. Not exactly, but not that far off. Or is audio a backdrop to some of life's other great delights - parties, sex, vacuuming... Some experiences are plenty exciting based on their own merits, no added music required. But, there's something to be said for audio as figurative flavor enhancement for experiences that are more pedestrian. |

I've been a musician and vocalist in the past(no record contracts - lol) and reproduced music is completely underwhelming compared to live or better yet, creating it with others. Yet, to my mother, listening to her music at home and live gets the same reaction. But, yes, for most people by the time they get into high-end audio, the magic is gone. |

It matches what's been written about the effects of some drugs, they don't thrill themselves but raise existing experiences to a different level. And it's certainly true that if you removed the 'banging music' from a carny the atmosphere would become deflated. But that's a really unrefined example. The carny's all about turning everything onto max and shocking the system. Do you have a more refined personal example of when you can remember audio making a difference to a pleasurable moment? I'd really like to interview you about it. This angle would make a fine addition to my thrill interview collection. If you knew the procedures for limmited lawsuits you would know that a dollar amount is required in the complaint.
