Hi,
In order to get the best HIFI playback sound out of my computer I'm planning to upgrade my SB audigy platinum. As an alterantive, the new SB audigy-2 looks ok for me. Anyone has any experiences ? Or are there better HIFI playback suited cards? Thx, Harry |

Hi, In order to get the best HIFI playback sound out of my computer I'm planning to upgrade my SB audigy platinum. Other than the fancy jack panel, the SB "Platinum" series of sound cards are not significantly different from the "MP3" versions costing about half as much. As an alternative, the new SB audigy-2 looks ok for me. In technical tests I've performed, the original Audigy outperforms the Audigy-2. Anyone has any experiences ? Or are there better HIFI playback suited cards? Yes, a great many. The Turtle Beach Santa Cruz is at least the equal of the Audigy, and can generally found for lower prices in regular brick-and-mortar retail stores. If you want a under $100 playback card with high sample rates like the Audigy-2 but with superior performance, there's the M-Audio Revolution 7.1. The M-Audio "Audiophile" is around $150 but provides even better performance. Then there's the world of high-performance sound cards for studios, recording and audio production. This starts out with the Echo MIA at under $200, the Card Deluxe for under $400 and the Lynx Studio Two for under $800. Each provides a substantial technical performance improvement over lower-cost cards in the same category. The M-Audio Delta 1010 is a very worthy 8-channel (expandable to 32 or more) card for mulichannel work at just under $600. Extremely high technical performance can be sonically justified for audio production cards because there's a good chance that music will be processed by them a number of times, as opposed to ordinary HiFi playback where the music goes through the card only once. There are many more options, but these are the ones that I have personal experience with and that have a good widespread reputation and availability. |
