Is it possible to damage a CD player by placing it too close to an
amplifier with a large power supply? I have heard that some people
advise against placing a CD player benath a power amp for this reason
(not directly beneath, but on a lower shelf in a tower set up).

Any thoughts?

No, absolutely not.
Sounds like a "whispering down the lane" version of the following true
consideration: If you place a CD player on top of an amplifier which
requires ventilation from the top, the amplifier may overheat.

The only damage the CD player will suffer, is physical damage if the
amplifier is very heavy, and the CD player is built out of thin guage sheet
metal.
