Hi,
Just out of curiosity... how do the modern producers and engineers get that uber-processed drum sound so popular on modern rock/metal records? I'm talking about the big, hyped sound with lots of attack and consistency and not a great deal of realism or natural feel. Artists currently displaying this kind of production on their cds: The Used, Funeral for a Friend, Fallout Boy, Lost Prophets, and most of the recent cookie cutter emo/metal bands out there. It's not the kind of drum sound I'd usually go for, but I'm just curious to know how it's achieved. Lots of compression... what kind of settings? Short release to maximise sustain of the drums? EQ at 3-4k? Triggering/samples? Reverb? Interesting studio tricks (please pass on any that you know)? Of course, the mix is probably then squashed into oblivion at the mastering stage, but what goes on before this? Thanks. TJ |
