Check out that lineup. All the biggest egos together, all f'charidee'.
I'll bet John Lydon wishes he could join them! Should be a real yawn
fest, like Live Aid. God that was boring.

Pink Floyd got staid after Obscured, IMO.

Please tell me that you were high when you made the last statement.

That being said, Live Aid and Knebworth were both snooze fests, though
Pink Floyd's set (minus Waters) was still pretty darn good,

Regarding the albums, after Obscured came the triumvirate of DSoTM, WYWH
and Animals. One better and bleaker than the other.

John Lydon is something else altogether. His work with PIL has been a
laugh, albeit a bad one. You should check out the Filth And The Fury to
see Rotten in his prime.

Do you think that Syd Barett will join them for an
"Astronomy Domine" revisited ? ;-)

IMO Live Aid had 2 stand out moments:

1. Queen's set
2. The performance of Peter Gabriel doing Biko.

The rest, bleh.

An absolute show stopper.

I think one of the other few performances with such evocative emotion
was Sting's rendition of "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free" at the
Nelson Mandela concert in Wembley, while Mandela was still imprisoned on
Robben Island.

Missed it, can't stand Sting, so it would be hard for him to move me.
He sounds like something is stuck in his throat.

Really? I think Sting has a phenomenal voice. The Police's style of punk
meets white reggae definitely put them in a league of their own.

I don't turn it off when I hear his voice but I don't go searching out
songs by Sting and own nothing he's ever done.

Perhaps it's an age thing, maybe I'm too old, although I did enjoy
stuff by Creed before Stapp started needing a separate chair for his
ego. My taste is kinda all over the map, lots of stuff from the 60's
and early 70's, not much from the 80's, but stuff from Glen Miller,
Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington and MJQ.

Some voices seem to work if the songs are strong enough, which would
explain why I like Springsteen but not why I can't listen to Tom Waits.

They're both tedious. How about a concert featuring Tom Petty and Brian Setzer?

I saw Tom Petty play Bass Concert Hall in Austin a couple of years ago.
He was pretty good. Brian Setzer I am not a fan of.

OK, for you it'll be Petty and Elton John, with an opener by the Manchester
Ersatz Elvis League.

Now you can make another crack about my "impressive knowledge of pop culture".

I'm not particularly fond of Elton John or Elvis Presley either.

My tastes are inclined more towards progressive, space, blues rock -
Pink Floyd, Gabriel-era Genesis, King Crimson, AC/DC, Allman Brothers,
Bowie, Zep, The Who, etc.

Lately I have also developed a bit of a taste for the Beatles's
post-Rubber Soul period.

Yes, Mickey, you are right. Similarly, what Normal people think of as pointless,
obnoxious argumentation is what Arnii Kroofeces calls the "debating trade". And
what Normal people call mindless, illogical, kneejerk oversimplification is what
you call "philosophy".

I could go on, but I can just imagine the shade of purple you're achieving as
you read my "lies". ;-)

Taste is subjective. Why do some people like vanilla and others
chocolate?

I have heard others sing his stuff and found it OK, I just can't deal
with the sound of his voice.

Yes that's true.
But Tom Waits is a famous songwriter, musician and composer. His
contribution to today music is undeniably very important.
So IMHO it's a pity to trash him in 2 words only. Do you understand ?

Oh my God, I agree with you.
The next thing you know, I'll be buying a Renault.

Reply :

That's your opinion, I'm not trashing him, I simply don't care for the
sound of his voice, it's like listening to guy in an Iron Lung.

He writes well, he sings in a way I don't care for.
He's a pretty decent actor as well.
