Default Two-channel AD/DA converters?

I'm looking to get an external 2ch ADC/DAC to get away from using the
decidely iffy motherboard audio.

What's out there in the sub-$500 range? I realize I COULD spend
$1500/channel, but that's more than a bit outside my budget.

Thanks.

If there's something Fantabulous for $100 (right) that'd be good too.

There's the Behringer ADA8000 for around $200.00. You'll need an ADAT
PCI card to connect it. I also found a Lynx 1 on Ebay. Internal card,
but they sound good.

Sorry, forgot to specify.

This is a WinXP machine with both PCI-2.0 and Firewire (Agere chipset)
available.

Er . . . USB, not PCI.

PCI rather goes without saying on an XP machine.

Sorry 'bout that. My allergy meds have me loopy

So are you asking about a soundcard rather than converters per say?

Check out the Presonus Firebox :

Just under $400 street and comes with a basic version of Steinberg's Cubase
