Default Clarion Sound Drop Out

Hi All,

Don't know if anyone can help me...

Im in the UK and have a 1994 Nissan Primera. This came with a Clarion
(branded Nissan) head unit. Fantastic sound out of that, never caused a
problem, the sound would go quite high with no problems, even from the
12 year old Blaupunkt speakers.

Anyhow, I changed the front speakers after things kept going wobbly and
they were so deteriorated. But that's not the problem, cutting that
story short, I have a set of JBL's all round. 4x6" in the front, 13cm
round in the back.

My head unit started to break down, a disastrous problem with grounding
and internal circuitry. I also wanted something to control an iPod, and
aware of how great Clarion were/are, and how they will be releasing an
iPod interface, I got myself a DXZ748RMP - an almost identical clone of
the DXZ745RMP.

For a while it's been great, and I've been playing the iPod throughout.
But after a while, I've noticed there were drop-out's in the sound. Only
fractionally at, not really high bass levels, but at just high noise levels.

Needless to say I was frustrated, but after turning up the AUX
sensitivity for the iPod on the back, I found I could get louder without
the drop outs!

But again after a while, the sound keeps dropping out.

This whole saga transpires this morning, I found one song that was
dropping out at volume level 27, Bass Gain +2, Balance R2, Fader R2 and
the rest default settings. Every time I play the same section of the
track, I get a sound cut out in exactly the same spot.

If I turn the volume down, it's fine. If I turn it back to 27, its
dropping out. If I turn the bass gain down to 0, it's fine, back to +2
it goes wrong again. So Im figuring at this stage, is the AMP.

So, then I twiddle the Fader to R13, no sound drop outs, F13, no sound
Drop Out, Ok, Fader back to R2, still no sound drop out.

So, Im confused. I'd imagine off the top of my head the AMP is getting
too hot, but surely modern head units should be able to output more
power than my old 12 year old Nissan head unit? And surely it should be
sensible enough not to cook the AMP?

I've heard someone of similar problems with other Clarion owners.

Also, the sound, while crystal clear, seems to be lower in volume than
the old head unit, which Im really frustrated about. I've used connector
cables all the way round to convert from existing wiring harnesses, so
no cable chopping, and no chance of putting the speaker connections the
wrong way round. :-)

Anyone got any advice, besides buy a new head unit?

Cheers
Simon
