I know iPods are all the rage right now, but does anyone have experience
with the other players? I'm having trouble making the commitment, even with
the limited choices in front of me.

As far as external speakers are concerned, somebody here recommended the
Tivoli PAL, which looks like the real deal. But I need an mp3 player.

Perhaps there is a web site that does thorough reviews; head-to-head
comparisons?
