Default 4 or 8 channel mic pres

I am over my crappy Presonus M80. I want either a grace 801 or a
millenia. the api 3124+ looks nice as well but its just 4 channels.
anyone have thoughts?

I would also like to buy one used if anyones got one to sell soon. I am
ready to buy now.

Thanks!

Millennia is nice; Great River makes a single rackspace 4 channel pre,
so two of those fit in the same space as the Millennia.

You might also look for used ATI's and / or TRUE Systems, both 8
channels of preamps in one rackspace.

Somewhere over the horizon gradually working through development is
something new of channels eight from FMR. But we can't have it yet.

We use the Grace 801. A nice box, and actually well-priced considering the
build quality. It's better than wire with gain IMO, I think of it as "air
with gain". In other words, if you're looking for any specific coloration,
you won't get it from the Grace stuff. Transformerless, fully balanced all
the way through.

Whether you go with the Grace or something else (and there are some good
options out there), have fun moving into this class of pre. It brings a
smile how much better things can sound if you can start ultra clean
(assuming you want ultra clean) from the get-go.

Hi,

What is it that you don't like about the M80,? Just curious. Plus, if you
describe what you don't like people will have a better time recommending
something else. Also giving a rough budget range is important too. Since
you are looking or something used, we can guess that you want something more
expensive than the M80 but less expensive than a new Grace, API or
Millennia?

I'd recommend getting a John Hardy M-1. Besides being an awesome pre you
will most likely keep the rest of your life you can buy the rack mount with
just a single channel in it to start ( $1120 or less depending on options )
and then if you want more channels you can add up to three more in the same
rack as your budget/desires dictate ( for $595 each or less depending on
options ) :

Best of luck.
