Default Guitar preamp distortion: Could you use adjustable bias?

Hi!

I've never seen other but cathode biased guitar preamps. As a curiosity, I'm
asking this question: Could you create a preamp circuit where you could
adjust the bias of the preamps with a potentiometer or some other way to
make the preamps go into distortion (run hot if that's the term)?

If it's possible would it be usable (sound good)? And would running the
tubes hotter make them wear out faster?
