Why I hang he (regarding glory days)
OK, my point of view is that glory days of RAT started with ZM's

Behold, Choky signalled from keyed 4-1000A filament:
1. technical reasons - clarify I learn something new everyday 2.social reasons - clarify All the regulars are good folk and our brand of humor is definately unique. 3. some other reason - clarify Watching the trolls back themselves into a corner, then self-destruct is always amusing. -- Gregg *It's probably useful, even if it can't be SPICE'd* http://geek.scorpiorising.ca |

Choky wrote: OK, my point of view is that glory days of RAT started with ZM's appearing, but I also allow you to have another opinion. Hehe. Well, I suppose it depends on how you define "glory". I'm reminded of a Carly Simon song, "*These* are the good old days." There might come a time when people will reminisce about 2003 as being the best of times (or possibly the worst of times, since glory almost always involves guts...) so ,if you are interested in so called social aspect of RAT life ,you may type your reasons for hangin' here : 1. technical reasons - clarify ....... Learn new things, get new viewpoints (even ones that I'd previously thought of as "snake oil" at least get another look). Like to contribute whatever I can, and thereby (hopefully) give something back. 2.social reasons - clarify..... With very few exceptions, everyone here is highly opinionated, yet respectful of contrary opinions. Most RATs have a certain eccentricity that's endearing to me because I happen to share it. 3. some other reason - clarify... Some of the side-trips we take are quite interesting also, such as transformers, vinyl, computers, and cats. The political crap I can do without. Same with religion and spirituality, thankfully we haven't had to deal with much of that. ps. some of us will hate if I mention dialectic nature of nature, but me thinks that even RAT must "live " under same laws as other part of universe. technical is just way of looking at life and electronic and....... ask any virtuoso on any musical instrument is it technical part of his recreation of music important; ZM sez-Conditio sine qua non . no less ,no more. mebbe we all know enough basic stuff ,mebbe is time for black (or whatever color you wish ) art. Yes, I think we have a good balance of science and art, mathematics and magic. I personally like it, Others will disagree, and at least some of us seem to miss the days when everything was completely technical, cut-and-dried, the numbers don't lie kind of stuff. But it's interesting that some of RAT's bloodiest battles were fought - not as "science vs. art" or "facts vs. snake-oil", but amongst factions within the technical community itself. So perhaps if a natural opposite doesn't existor is suppressed, one will be artificially created to fill the void. Maybe Hegel would agree, or maybe not. In either case, it's unlikely that I'd understand his answer. ;-) Cheers, Fred -- +--------------------------------------------+ | Music: http://www3.telus.net/dogstarmusic/ | | Projects: http://dogstar.dantimax.dk | +--------------------------------------------+ |

This was done using sacred bronze ingots that the priest informed us had been prayed over by Tibetan monks and purified for six years or so. Women were not allowed in the building or to touch the bronze ingots, patterns or moulds as this would "reset" or "discharge" the sacredness. The castings were done with much chanting and burning of candles and turned out fine in spite of some doubts about the original patterns. They rode back to the temple in the front seat of the car while this guys wife?/concubine?/maid? rode in the back seat. All in all a very interesting experience. Mark Harriss |

As much as I admire Tibetans, I could never agree that the mothers of all of us, and shielas of this earth are less than sacred......... I would find it very difficult to help anyone anytime if I knew they valued women less than men. The castings were done with much chanting and burning of candles and turned out fine in spite of some doubts about the original patterns. They rode back to the temple in the front seat of the car while this guys wife?/concubine?/maid? rode in the back seat. Sounds like a mysoginists convention to me. I guess that's a hard thing to say, but where ppl place bloomin bits of metal and male only incantations ahead of their women, I have grave concerns. What would be wrong with the woman driving the car, and the bloke in the back seat, for 50% of the time at least? The bits of metal would then be imbued with both male AND female spiritual power. But I guess you can't really have monastaries with both women and men all in together, since no-one could keep their minds on God and prayer, since a man 's blood supply can't be in two places at the same time. All in all a very interesting experience. Yeah, and I have found every westener I've known who has become a buddhist to be somewhat selfish, since it seems to me their conciousness revolves around self realizations, and enlightenment, rather than active charities towards others. Apart from that, I would not mind if there were more Tibetans around, and more buddhists, since they seem more peacefully minded over all. If only the bloomin chinese would wake up, and leave Tibet alone, and recognise the Dalai Lama, we could have so much more respect for china, and we wouldn't feel so guilty buying tube amps from china, and propping up the "chinese way" of doing things. I don't mind NOS Australian tubes, over which sacred incantations like "We are gonna have a meat pie tonight for dinner....," were heard amoungst the women making the tubes....... Patrick Turner. Hi RATs!
This is the day, my friend, Carport Dime! Wars and whores are not our finest hour, but, sadly, common. Opinions about stuff seem pretty important and useful, until you relax your brain and think about life, the universe and everything. Then, opinions seem like mind circles that my mental hamster runs in to keep busy. Sigh. On a happier note: I reduced the input cap, between volume pot and grid stopper, from 0.5 uF to 0.05uF. Wow! OK, bigger is not always better Happy Ears! Al Alan J. Marcy Phoenix, AZ PWC/mystic/Earhead |

For sure. I guess every superpower (wannabee) has to go through the process of rattlings the swords and showing military might, rather ignorant of the fact that the real power is, for some time now, with the economic grip on the world (or lack thereof). But I guess it will be more of the same, with spending well over a Billion dollar on 'defence' globally each day. At the same time burning NG & oil at an alarming rate for fuel. Hopefully some of those billions will get diverted to research in new energy source development and saving oil for the much better uses it has (like making medicins, plastics, etc.). Well enough OT hotchpotch for today. Maybe Hegel would agree, or maybe not. In either case, it's unlikely that I'd understand his answer. ;-) Come now, surely you would. The process of breaking up is called "diremption" AFAIK. The best part of breaking up is when you make it up. The US is an extraordinarily successful example of the principle. Note that the break-up of Yugoslavia and the weakening of centralised power in the UK is in the context of the emergence of a larger and more coherent power bloc in Europe. Would be the same in Arabia if we let it. Anyway, if residents here spent half their time arguing amongst themselves, and the other half defending each other against external threats, that would be fairly typical of how social groups seem to work. cheers, Ian |

Some give a +4 for some item of human behaviour, and another might give a -3, and yet another a -1, so when you add up what all of them say about how life must be led, you get a zero! I don't have to try hard to keep out of churches, synagogues, mosques, whatever, it just comes naturally. I have been seen in movie theatres, and banks, and cafes, and when young, pubs!
