Default ST-70 driver tubes

Hi folks,

I'm a newbie with tube audio. When I put my ST-70 together I used Svetlana
(CED) power tubes and Sovtek 7199 driver tubes. The Russian 7199 tubes are
half the price of NOS and I had a couple in my tube box.

Do the 7199's have an effect on the sound of the amp? If so I'll have to
ring up one of the tube vendors at alt.guitar.amps and get some new ones.
Thanks much.

John

John,

Some of the old 7199s are microphonic. I'm under the impression that the
stock 7199s may not age gracefully sometimes . . . . I have no experience
with newer 7199s.

However, I have modded a number of ST-70s and my favorite is the Welbourne
Labs approach. Ned Carlson of Triode Electronics also has a kit . . .
Both of these mods obviate the need for the venerable 7199.

Yes, the NOS 7199 sound quite a bit more open than the Sovtek. In the SCA35
the Sovtek just would not work.

Thanks alot everyone. Sounds like the camp is split on this one. I'll stay
with the Sovtek's until I get the bread for the NOS. After that I'll know
for sure.

John

I don't know, I have RCA 7199's in my ST-70 and they sound noisy. I
guess it could be worse?

My experience is that RCA 7199 blackplates sound best, followed by Sylvanias.

I've put them in SCA35's before, and in some cases
you'd get a "zipping" sound until the amp warmed up.
IIRC some of the earlier ones just sat there
and oscillated. Best can figure is that this was
due to the way the wires were arranged in the base
of the tube to make it pin compatible with 7199.
Seems they've straightened that problem out.

Funny you said that.
I get the same "zipping" sound in a SCA35 on warm up.
I always though it was due to the new JJ electrolytics or something...
Thanks.

I have a pair of Sovtek's in my ST-70. No problems with sound
whatsoever. The only time I got burned with tubes was with my pre-amp.
Using Sovtek 12AX7WB's. When I stop and think, it comes through
the amp. I have never seen tubes as noisy as these.
