Default Audiophiles.

Someone in the Melbourne Audio Club said

"Audiophiles don't actually like music, just the
sound it makes."

Then someone else said "Now that's poetry! The truth is but so
simple...
It only sounds good to me if it is music."

Mmhh !!!
Some said that music is just a kind of organized noise.

Today I was in a recording studio and sure, people working here listen to
the sound, not to the music.

Good way to put it. Reminds me of an Audio Test Record I have (yes,
vinyl) that has tracks that I don't really care for as music, but it
just sounds so nice! An example is he (short snippet in wav format,
and entire track in mp3 format)

That you don't know who Yanni, or John Tesh are just shows that you
have good taste.

LOL! Merely a year ago I would have agreed with you. But then a friend
sent me a copy of Yanni's "Live at the Acropolis" and I was amazed. I
*like* Yanni! Some of his work is quite innovative, I was actually quite
surprised at how polyrhythmic some of it is.

Maybe I should give John Tesh a try...

But to answer Patrick's question perhaps a bit more directly - it's
music that's generally classed as "New Age." It's a step above "Ambience
music" (from a traditional view of what constitutes music). It doesn't
always have a melody, the harmonies and harmonic changes are rarely
obvious or "catchy", and rhythms are often subtle at best, or even
non-existant in the usual "boom-chick boom-chick" sense.

As someone who *does* appreciate New Age music in the right settings, I
feel qualified to offer the following joke:

Q: What do you get if you play New Age music backwards?
A: New Age music.

Cheers,
Fred

Tim,

At least it's not as bad as Aaron Carter. Both, my Hallicrafters
S-19R and Dynakit ST-70 get a "headache" from Aaron Carter. I, myself
got a headache when I saw him perform on stage in 2000, opening-up for
Britney Spears.

I didn't reaize Yanni and John Tesh put out direct-to-disc LP's!

The statement is somewhat true, an appreciation for music is not required to
be an audiophile, though it obviously generally comes along for the ride.
Similarily, whoever engineered Yanni or Tesh albums isn't necessarily a fan,
but can still do a good job.
