Default Kroomeloscopy, Or How I Actually Feel About Crown And QSC

Kroomeloscopy is one of those professionally awkward and distasteful
procedures that is sometimes necessary. With a sleeve length butyl
gauntlet, respirator, goggles and a little Vick's VapoRub under the
nose-a trick that has gotten many a novice homicide dick through his
first Noguchi Makeover-we must go onward however.

Kroo Cal's audio world revolves around Klipsch La Scalas.
Seriously.
Pretty nasty-sounding speakers by modern standards.

Pretty nasty-sounding by 30 year-old standards, too. Did we mention
big and ugly?

Apparently you can still buy them as new products, for about $4K a
pair:

However, the current La Scala seems to have a number of technical
updates.
Unfortunately, those phenolic horn tweeter diaphragms position them as
being
strictly on the cheap, no matter what price they sell for. Serious PA
speakers use horn drivers with aluminum or titaniam diaphragms.

Funny how Cal dumps on modern PA amps but dotes on 45 year-old PA

speakers

La Scalas are not even good PA speakers. Too much of the legacy design
is
left in place.

And

Kroo (Cal The part number or fab process of the device wasn't the
deciding
factor. The nature of the devices hasn't changed, you still have two
kinds of transistors, FETs and bipolars. Read Hamm's paper
again-better yet look up other papers referencing it, such as the one
Van Alstine's kid wrote.)

Totally unresponsive.

(Cal I don't think a rebuttal per se is in the scholarly

literature, if
you want to write one be my guest and if it is generally accepted as
debunking Hamm et al I won't be using the Hamm paper aymore. But it's
still the horse's mouth document until that happens. Regardless of
your ad hominem unscientific attacks.)

Totally unresponsive.

BTW Cal, when are you going to learn how to properly quote the posts
you are
trying and failing to respond to?

Okay, so that everyone is on the same page,
I never badmouthed or denigrated Crown or QSC as companies or their
products. I think they are superb pieces of equipment for the function
for which they are designed, marketed and sold. That being pro sound
reinforcement. I don't deny they can be used for home sound and are
superior to some other products for that purpose, but that isn't their
first best purpose, and most really serious listeners will prefer
something else in most situations. What's so hard about understanding
this simple position? You may not agree, but it shouldn't be too hard
to comprehend.

Secondly, I know better than Kroo does what the LaScala's limitations
are. I never said they were the best possible speakers. A tweeter
upgrade to a better driver-perhaps the "French Love" JBL discussed
earlier-will undoubtedly improve them and a clean sheet of paper effort
or at least a 're-imagining' of the concept is going to be a bigger
improvement. He is correct that metal diaphragms sound a lot better. I
intend to either get a repro cab built to implement this change or to
redriver my existing LaScalas. It may be more cost effective to start
from scratch and resell my LaScalas, which I should be able to sell for
what I paid for them. The Edgarhorns are a third possibility although
Edgar seems a little tough to deal with.

Third, I don't live on this newsgroup so from time to time I may be
delayed. That's hardly 'totally unresponsive'. Arny knows full well
that to get the Hamm paper dismissed he has to do better. He has to
prove that Hamm was either full of **** at the time or that he was
essentially correct but that newer devices and topologies have changed
the issue such that Hamm's theses are no longer relevant, or less so.
He has no intention of actually doing so even though it would be a
chance to use his great PC sound card based test suite, most probably
because he doesn't want the scrutiny submission to AES would involve.
Both of his equipment (sic) and his results.
