Default Obscure Studer-Revox Spare

Yo R.a.p.'s

A customer of mine has a Revox C278 1/2" 8tk. He Loves it!

Like this:

http://people.freenet.de/reeltoreel/...er/C278-F1.htm

It needs a new capstan motor.
Revox say "Go away".
Studer (It's a Studer Motor) Say "not used in anything else; go ask
Revox"!!

Anybody know anything before I try pulling it to pieces???

Molto Grazie.

What's wrong with the motor?

Most likely the motor was manufactured by Papst in St. Georgen,
Germany (www.papst.de). Some years ago a motor in my Uher tape
recorder failed (it ran hot) and I sent it to Papst for repair.
It was done at about 1/3rd of the price of a new motor - which
was not on stock at Uher. The motor is still ok today.

However, I don't know if Papst is still able to repair those
special motors found in tape recorders. To check for a repair
the model and serial number engraved on the motor is needed.

What is wrong with the motor? Does it turn? Does it turn at all
speeds? Is it just bad bearings?

If it's just bad bearings it should be an easy rebuilding job.

Papst in the US does not seem to know about any of this stuff any
more. A few years ago I was looking for parts or replacements for
the Papst cassette transports for a duplication system, and they
looked at me like some sort of alien.

The Revox motors have multiple-phase windings and operate at some
fairly high frequency to reduce cogging. This means your neighborhood
motor rebuilder can't rewind them, but they probably can get new
bearings for them.

-- Oh, one of the last Revox types. But why the new motor? The
windings could be gone only if mechanically schratched or a wire
broken, what is under normal circumstances almost impossible (well if
somebody pushed a screwdriver trough bell rotor holes to "assist"
removal, these would be rather abnormal circumstances I must say). So
if stator wires are OK (they can be checked with an ohmmeter for
continuity), the motor needs just to be dismantled and the bearings
cleaned. The front sintered bronze bearing may be sprayed with WD40
first if possibly stuck. Then you remove the clip from the bell and
remove it. You can pull out the capstan. See if it is OK at the
bearing surfaces and at the tape contact area (it should be finely
roughened).
Now you'd need a circlip pliers to remove the bearing circlip. There's
a fat chrome washer ring with a pin for the bell, a pair of spring
steel rings, a brass thrust ring coated with PTFE at one side and the
ball bearing itself. It may be in this order listed but again maybe it
may not (I'm writing this as remembered only).

Check this bearing and wash it if necessary. Usually a squirt of WD40
will do -- I think the grease in the bearing may be still OK.

Check the bronze front bearing and wash amply with the WD40 then oil
with a light(est) grade oil.

After reassembling, the motor may well be fine again.

If the capstan is bad, I think that B77 high speed (30 ips) capstans
would fit perfectly. It can be obtained from Revox. And really, did
they say "Go away"? -- It would be quite curious for me!

Good luck!

Pooh, I just see it's an 8-track... Anything from my post applies but
the B-series capstan.

Pardon me.

Well the W&F is crap. The motor grumbles if you stick a stethoscope on
it. It is a unique motor, not used in any other machine.
The Motor is labeled Studer. I haven't taken it apart, so it might say
Papst inside. Doesn't look like Papst-style motor though. It is quite low
profile. It seems to have a phosphor-bronze top-bearing.

I'll have to see if the client wants further expense before proceeding.
Anyone got a service manual?

Bingo. Bad bearings. Take it apart.

I think the number of these machines sold in the US can be counted on
one hand. There were a bunch sold in Europe, but they are very rare here
because they were competing with Tascam gear that was far cheaper.
