I am wrapping up the restoration of a '71 El Camino SS and it's time to
consider music. I don't want to cut the original dash, so my options are to
find an original shaft-mount system with good sound, or I could find an
original type radio of any kind (even AM) to dill the dash and then mount a
system remotely.

I am leaning towards the latter option. Any suggestions on a head with
either a RF wireless remote that does not require "Line of Sight" to work,
or a wired remote. I don't want to cut the glovebox either, so I'm
considering mounting the unit on the bed wall between the seats. I am aware
of the AutoSound Secret Audio unit, but I'm looking for other options.
Maybe someone out there has a good Shaft-mount unit at a reasonable price.
Please offer ideas either on the group, or I can be emailed at

From what I can tell going to car shows, most people with CD players in
their older 50s - 70s autos they will mount the new headunit underneath the
original radio. Just kind of hangs from the dash, still may have 2 small
holes though for the brackets.
