Default New speakers with old mini hifi? Opinions please...

I'd like to know if you think there is any point to my following idea. I
want to improve the quality of the system that I have right now in my living
room but money is extremely limited. I've read on a couple of places that
the weakest link with all-in-one systems is often the speakers.
I've been thinking of getting a pair of Tdl STUDIO 10 floorstander speakers
(£199) or something similar and quality speaker cable from Richer Sounds and
pairing it up to the Aiwa system I have until I get funds to buy cd, amp
seperates etc.
Is there any point though? Would the Aiwa completely fail to do the
speakers justice? In which case I guess I'll just have to wait and buy the
whole shebang in one go.

The Aiwa basic specs a
Aiwa NSX-320 mini hifi
16bit Dual DAC CD player
40 watts output
3 way bass reflex speakers with basic cable
It's a good 10 years old but still in good condition.

It depends whether your amp has enough gusto to drive the speakers.
It's not simply a case of the amp doing "justice", if you try to draw
too much current from a weedy amp there's a chance something bad might
happen to it and also the speakers.

Noted. Thanks.

I'm not sure why you're looking at the TDL Studio 10. I suspect these
do NOT lack bass, that's for sure. Doubtful. Alternatively, for £200
you could buy a pair of Mission M71i, some stands, and a second hand
amp that will drive them very well.

I read a couple of good reviews about the TDL's on the net somewhere that's
all. It doesn't have to be them exactly, I just figured best to spend more
on speakers now and then upgrade everything else later. As for the
Missions, I was going along the basis of 'you get what you pay for' and
figured £199 speakers ought to be better than £59 speakers...
I also (rightly or wrongly) had formed the impression that floorstanders
were better than standmount speakers because of their size, air flow and
whatever.
