Default Compresser on master fader in mastering - increasing gain?

I am now regularly putting Digirack Compressor 2 on my master strip during
mixdown, with just the teeniest bit of activity. I like the way it makes
the song 'feel', albeit possibly ethereal.

On the current mastering project, the overall (master) level is a tad low
for the -3 avg. I am seeking.

With this situation - previous to inserting this compressor - I would have
tweaked up all the groups a bit, and the master fader.

But now, to bring up the overall level, I have the option to increase the
gain on the compressor.

Would be interested in discussion along the lines of "why push the master
fader, vs the groups, or the compressor gain..."
