They are probably listening back to something that has been recorded using
the lower faders to mix the levels.
Typically the upper faders are used for recording, setting level to tape.

Took me a sec to try and understand what you meant.

That kind of recording desk has 2 faders. How there are used depends on what
you're doing and also your preference ( there's often a 'fader swap' button ).

Basically, when tracking ( i.e. recording ), 1 set of faders sets the track (
recording ) level while the other sets the monitor ( what you hear ) level.

Since all the upper faders are at zero - it's fair to assume that the pic shows a
mixdown situation where no further recording is taking place and the nice big
faders are used exclusively to create the final mix.

Any 'flying fader' type automation is always exclusively on the nice big ( lower
) faders btw.

Which would also explain why the band is in the control room ;o)

Not true. My console has moving faders upper and lower. While the upper
faders are often used to set level to tape during tracking, many people use
them as extra line level inputs for synths, effects, and other sources during
mixdown. For this purpose, having moving fader automation on the upper faders
is every bit as useful as having it on the lower faders.

Being as the band is in there with him I'd say that the engineer is in mix
mode, the small faders are mostly used as a monitor fader in rec mode as stated
by Joe. Or (with this console) you can use the channel out option to use the
small fader as an extra aux send. Or you can use the fader swap option to use
the small faders as your main mix fader, it depends on what mode your in, how
you like to mix and how much you need to do with the mix.

Maybe they had lunch and it didn't agree with them. Or maybe the session was
draging.
