Default Monitor Shopping...some quick comparisons.

Time for new monitors. I'm in an apartment, my room is about 10' x 14'
x 8'. This is for what I would call very near field. I have one of
those two tier workstations with the monitors about 2 feet away. I
have Yorkville YSM-1s but it's time for something else. They've done
well for the $150 I spent but they don't give me what I want/need and
aren't sheilded. My budget is under $1000.

Things I have mixed on in other rooms.

Tannoy System 12: These were set up a bit closer than usual for
monitors that size. My mixes from them came out wayyy too dark. Don't
like the sort of 'horn' sound from the tweeters at close range.
Surprisingly little bass from the size of these things. Could have
been the room?

Yorkville YSM-1: My mixes end up too bright and I can't really tell
what's going on in the low bass.

Mackie HR824: Mixes came out balanced. Might have been the better
room. More $$ than I want to spend.

I'm considering small tops with a sub or something with an 8 inch
woofer for more in the sub 80Hz realm. The Blue Sky Pro Desk system
looks appealing. Hard to find anywhere to audition them. Maybe KRK V4s
or JBL LSR25Ps with a sub. The KRK Rockit line is right in my price
range.

These Samsons with a ribbon tweeter look interesting but just came
out.

I started with what was available close by with 8 inch woofers. Did
some quick listening at Guitar Ctr. Quick results, I need to do a lot
more.

KRK V8 vs Mackie 824:

The KRKs had more forward upper mids, say around 800 - 2K. Vocals
popped out of the speaker. The low end seemed tight but a little weak
below 80Hz. The extended highs sounded nice but the mid peak may mask
them a little. That mid peak could be a good thing to spot out
problems in that area. Or the opposite, it could lead to the inverse
problem listening on other systems.

The Mackies sounded more 'in the speaker'. The top end seemed a little
smoother but not as much definition in the mids. Center imaging could
have been a bit better. More low end but just a little undefined.

Other Quick looks

M-Audio BX8 : Lots of low end and lots of high end. At first I liked
the solid thump I heard but the top end was too harsh for me. Boom -
tizz.

Event Tuned Reference 8 : Seemed a little dark, not a lot of detail in
the highs.

KRK Rockit 8: I'm intrigued, The top end seemed smoother than the V8s
and maybe a bit more low end. These weren't placed well too A/B them
so I need to go back. They look good for the money but too soon to
tell.
