I have a Soundcraft Spirit M8 mixer that I want to use with my MOTU 828mkII for
occasional drumset submixes. The Soundcraft has a S/PDIF out which is a digital version of the Mix Out. The MOTU has a S/PDIF input. I just got a Monster Cable S/PDIF cable to connect the two together. I tested the S/PDIF by patching my old Korg D16's main outputs into the PB (playback) input of the Soundcraft. My plan was to record the output of the Korg into the MOTU AudioDesk software. The Korg played through the PB bus of the Soundcraft and went into the S/PDIF input of the MOTU, which fed the data into my Mac and was recorded onto a stereo track in AudioDesk. It worked perfectly...BUT...there is a regular half-second burst of white noise ONLY in the right channel. This noise occurs at regular intervals...about once every 5 seconds. Needless to say, had this been an actual take, it would have been useless. I KNOW I COULD HAVE SIMPLY PATCHED THE KORG D16 DIRECTLY INTO THE MOTU UNIT...but I was testing the S/PDIF output on the Soundcraft board. My first thought was a digital "clock" mis-match between the MOTU and the Korg D16, but this can't be since I was using the ANALOG outputs of the Korg D16. Basically, I was just using the Soundcraft board to "convert" (for lack of a better term) the audio output of the Korg into digital data to be sent to the MOTU, which then sent it on to the computer. What could have happened? Why would I have perfect sound on the left channel and sound interrupted with white noise bursts on the right channel? Am I missing something here? Any thoughts/tips/information would be MUCH appreciated.... |
